As part of the celebration of the College Founders' Day, the second High Table Dinner was held on 10 November 2016, attended by members of the Committee of Overseers, guests, teachers and students. The guest of honour on the occasion was Dr Alan Hiu Fung Lam, Founder and CEO of Sengital Ltd, who spoke on 'The Road from CUHK Student to Entrepreneur'.
Alan Lam began by showing students how to take a selfie in panoramic mode with his smart phone — an apt way to express his passion for the IT industry and a charming move welcomed by the students. Dr Lam obtained all his degrees at CUHK, culminating with a PhD, and in 2004 founded Sengital Ltd, a design and engineering services company.
Dr Lam's success did not happen overnight. He related how he could not select computing classes in secondary school, since his family could not afford a computer. He was not discouraged and was admitted to the Faculty of Engineering, CUHK. His lack of computing experience, however, became an inescapable challenge, as the coursework involved computation. He continued to strive for his best, and, despite these handicaps, managed to go on to postgraduate studies, in which he researched on motion sensing technology, a field to which he has made significant contributions, and which laid the foundation for many products and solutions that brought him and his company recognitions.
Now a successful entrepreneur, Dr Lam's advice to students is modest: never give up. He believes that being an entrepreneur is a very encouraging process to accelerate his learning, and encouraged students to pursue what they love for a fulfilling life.
