Professor Wai-Yee Chan assumes Mastership
Prof Wai-Yee Chan, Professor and Director of the School of Biomedical Sciences, has been appointed Master of CW Chu College for a period of four years, with effect from 1 January 2017. The College is delighted to welcome Prof Wai-Yee Chan.

We are pleased to bring to you Issue 15 of the College Newsletter, which summarizes the achievements from the beginning of the 2016–17 academic year onwards.

Appointments and Staff Movement

Prof Wai-Yee Chan, Professor of Biomedical Sciences and Director of School of Biomedical Sciences, has been appointed Master of the College with effect from 1 January 2017, for a term of four years. Prof Chan joined CW Chu College as an affiliate and was appointed College Fellow, with effect from 12 October 2016.

Prof Kenneth Young retired from the position of College Master at the end of 2016. College alumni, students, teachers and staff gathered on 14 January 2017 at a Farewell Lunch in honour of Prof Young.

The year 2016 marked the graduation of our first cohort. As we entered 2017, we reflected on the journey of our founding students, who had witnessed the growth also of the College.

Former Secretary for Justice on a Better Life and Society
Mr Wong Yan Lung, former Secretary for Justice of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, graced us with his presence as the Guest of Honour at the College's Third High Table Dinner (2016–17) held on 17 January 2017. Also attending the dinner were Prof Joseph JY Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University, Prof Wai-Yee Chan, Master, Prof Kenneth Young, Founding Master, and many teachers, affiliates and students.

Service Team Builds Intimate and Involved Community

Closing Ceremony at CUHK

The Service Team completed the summer project ʻUnderstanding Socially Disadvantaged School Youths through a Social Service Endeavour 2016ʼ, the fourth in a series that began in 2013, with a Closing Ceremony held on 10 September 2016.

A Taste of Buddhist Wisdom
On 12 Nov 2016, the College organised a day trip to Tsz Shan Monastery in Tai Po, taking 30 students to explore the wisdom of Buddhism. Organised by Prof Wong Suk Ying, Warden of the College, and her team of resident tutors, the trip introduced participants to new perspectives in life and to the enduring Buddhist culture.

Utrecht Summer Programme 2016

Through the GOAL Programme of United College, two CWC students participated in a two-week Summer Programme at Utrecht University in the Netherlands in July 2016. The following is an extract of the sharing from Mr CHAN Chin Wang and Mr CHAN Wang Fung about their studies and experience last summer.

Incoming Exchange Students in Term 2

A new batch of 17 incoming exchange students joined the College family in Term 2, 2016–17. They came from universities in Austria, Canada, elsewhere in China, Ireland, Korea, Mexico, Sweden, The Netherlands and the US.

Peer Mentoring Programme
The Peer Mentoring Programme was launched in 2014 by The Independent Learning Centre (ILC) in collaboration with the College, to help new students in their transition to university life, by offering individual support from a peer mentor, who is upper-year student trained by ILC and the Office of Student Affairs.

High Table Dinners

The Second High Table Dinner (2016–17)

As part of the celebration of the College Founders' Day, the second High Table Dinner was held on 10 November 2016, attended by members of the Committee of Overseers, guests, teachers and students. The guest of honour on the occasion was Dr Alan Hiu Fung Lam, Founder and CEO of Sengital Ltd, who spoke on 'The Road from CUHK Student to Entrepreneur'.

Visitors
From August 2016 to February 2017, the College received a number of visitors. The visitors learnt more about the CUHK College system and the features of CW Chu College, and joined guided tours around the College premises. Details of these visits are as follows (in chronological order).
