Planning of Establishing Guangdong-Hong Kong Advanced Institute for Regenerative Medicine

As an endeavor to promote research advancement in regenerative medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) collaborated with Guangzhou Regenerative Medicine and Health Guangdong Laboratory (GRMH-GDL) on an initiative to establish a joint advanced institute.  A planning ceremony was held at Guangzhou on 22 September 2019.  Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK led a delegation to attend the activities. The CUHK delegation also included Professor Chan Wai-yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Professor Wan Chao and Professor Feng Bo of School of Biomedical Sciences; and Professor Jiang Yangzi from the Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. The ceremony was joined by guests from the Guangdong Science and Technology Department, Guangzhou Municipal Government as well as scholars from GRMH-GDL and its collaborative partners.

Professor Tuan said during the ceremony, 'Based on the established relationship between CUHK and GRMH-GDL, the newly proposed joint research unit will further utilize research resources and strength.  With the joint efforts of both sides, our collaboration will surely yield great outcomes, expanding the depth of the collaboration as a crucial part of the international innovation and science initiative in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.'

CUHK has concluded a wide range of collaborative initiatives with universities and research organizations in Guangdong Province.  Around 30 joint research units have been established, including State Key Laboratory, Ministry of Education Key Laboratory, as well as research extension unit at the national level in humanities and social sciences.  This proposed establishment will strengthen the links between the Guangzhou Municipal Government and the University, enhancing partnership developments in the areas of stem cells, regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, tissue and organ rebuilding, precision medicine and clinical research; as well as joint supervision of PhD students.
