The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) joined hands with the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) Xi'an to establish a Joint Research Laboratory of Space Microwave Technology and Smart Manufacturing. The inauguration ceremony took place in CUHK on 28 February. Professor Li Jun, President of CAST Xi'an led a five-member delegation to the University and officiated at the ceremony with Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK.
The joint laboratory lies its core research fields in microwave technology and related products, and will carry out research and development in microwave products, microwave technology integration, and microwave components for space requirements. Both Professor Li and VC stated in their speeches that the establishment of the joint research unit will deeper research exchanges, scaling new heights of collaboration in future. Professor Yu Ming of Department of Electronic Engineering in CUHK will serve as the founding director of the lab.
During their visit to CUHK, the delegates met and devised collaboration plans with Professor Wong Suk-ying, Associate Vice-President; Professor Martin Wong, Faculty Dean of Engineering; Professor Max Meng, Department Chair of Electronic Engineering and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of Academic Links (China).
Founded in 1968, CAST is one of the leading space technology and product development bases in China and belongs to China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. Since its establishment, it has witnessed stages of breakthroughs in the development of manned space activities, as in the successful development of Red East 1, China's first man-made earth satellite, and the subsequent launches of several manned spacecrafts of Shenzhou (Divine Vessel) and Lunar-orbiting Spacecraft Chang'e 1.
