8. Before Traveling Abroad for Work / Conference / Holiday

When traveling abroad for work/conference/holiday, you may use public Wi-Fi or public computers to check e-mails or access to the Internet. Please be cautious that information transferred through public Wi-Fi or public computers might be leaked even it is encrypted.

The following best practices are for a safe computing and can be found at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/security/gpis/travelingabroad.html (English) and http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/chinese/security/gpis/travelingabroad.html (Chinese).

  1. Use ONLY your own personal devices (such as computers, smartphones or tablets) to access any system that requires your passwords and:
    • Enable a VPN connection on your device.
    • Make sure you are accessing from your own devices through a secure webpage which should have an address started with 'https'.
  2. Be cautious when using public computers or public Wi-Fi network:
    • Use public computers or public Wi-Fi network for causal browsing ONLY.
    • Consider all public computers are insecure. They might have been compromised by virus or malware. Therefore DO NOT enter passwords and any personal data with these computers.
    • DO NOT access CUHK IT systems such as CUHK VPN, CUSIS, OnePass, CWEM, eLearning, Staff Self-Service Enquiry System and etc. to avoid private information or CWEM password leakage.
    • If it is inevitable to access the above CUHK IT systems through a public computer or public Wi-Fi, you should change your password immediately with a secure computer in a secure network.

If a suspicious information security incident occurs during your travel, please report to ITSC (infosec@cuhk.edu.hk) immediately.
