Workshops on Getting Ready for the Workplace: Speakers Series — Learn from Professionals and an Alumnus (11, 12 and 13 April 2023)
The annual Speakers Series held usually in Term 2 aims to encourage junior students to have early plans for the workplace. Three sessions were held respectively on 11, 12 and 13 April 2023 on selected topics.
Session one covered an introduction to the workplace and to career resources. Drawing from his rich experience guiding students in their career planning, Prof Kenneth YOUNG urged students to identify and to fill the gaps between their current competencies and the levels required in their targeted professions as early as possible, and highlighted the crucial differences between being a student and an employee. Ms Ivy KWOK, Executive Officer, Career Planning and Development Centre, Office of Student Affairs (OSA), pointed students to career resources available at OSA, and outlined the steps students could take to efficiently work towards their goals.
Session two introduced students to aptitude tests and related assessments. Mr Andrew LAU from Career Hackers, a startup founded by a recent CWC graduate, shared skills and strategies for analyzing and answering commonly faced questions.
Session three focused on practical tips for job applications and career development, given by two speakers. Mr Sam LIU, Senior Reward Manager from HSBC, was the first speaker. His topic, ‘Lightning guide to résumés and interviews’, covered the dos and don'ts throughout the job application process succinctly. Mr Matthew LI, a member of the Class of 2019 majoring in Global Economics and Finance and currently Customer Experience Manager, Wealth and Personal Banking, Hong Kong, HSBC, spoke next. He gave a convincing account from the perspective of college students — a role he graduated from not long ago. Matthew shared relatable experiences, successful and not-so-successful stories, and debunked assumptions (critical mistakes that might not be obvious but could have been avoided).
