Frank Bacon’s Hong Kong: Early Twentieth Century Photograph Album of Hong Kong

Lacquer album with 284 black and white photographs taken by amateur photographer Frank Bacon laid down on 49 card pages. The vast majority of images, though are photos taken in Hong Kong, and most have been carefully labelled in pencil, most likely by Arthur Hacker, Hong Kong historian and author from whose collection this album comes. There are photos of family and friends in the married quarters, and numerous images of the landscape of Hong Kong, including the dockyard, Aberdeen Harbour, Queens Road, Grand Houses on the Peak, the Peak Tramway, Happy Valley racecourse, the City Hall and Supreme Court under construction, the Praya and the Star Ferry.

One photo depicts early land reclamation work around Victoria harbour. The photographer (who is shown with his camera in one photo) was clearly accomplished, and took many photos of street scenes and everyday life in Hong Kong: among them, pictures of street-sellers, a street barber, a professional letter writer, water carriers, dragon-boat racers and life on sampans. There are also some graphic images of the execution ground. The life of expatriate military officers is captured in images of a Hong Kong bar frequented by British troops, and of a billiard room with an early gramophone. A few photos were also taken in Macao, including the Macao steamer wharf.
