1. From the University Librarian

‘Hello, Goodbye’
a hit song for the Beatles back in 1967 is the perfect headline for this issue of the CUHK Library newsletter. First a very warm hello to our new students and teachers, and welcome back to all returnees - we probably haven’t seen you for a while.

The return to face-to-face activities on campus is uplifting and the Library has begun in-person orientations, training and is planning events such as the opening of our new exhibition on Lingnan literati. We will continue with the modifications made to lower risk from COVID-19 with reduced seating, temperature checking, face masks…and appreciate your compliance.

We will continue to develop our digital offering, recognizing that not everyone has been able to return to campus. We also know that many students appreciate the convenience of using our digital library and self-directing learning materials. So watch out for more online training, more digitized collections and online offerings this year.

We also say hello to a number of new young librarians who have joined us in the past few months. They bring a fresh perspective, and you can find out more about them in the newsletter. Other things to say hello to are the refreshed Library homepage, extended Sunday opening hours, new collection purchases and more, details in the newsletter.

Now for the goodbyes. First, we must pay tribute to Dr Maria Lau, Deputy University Librarian, who retired this summer after almost thirty years at CUHK Library. She did much to shape the Library and you can find out more about her impact on the Library in the newsletter.

I will be following Dr Lau into retirement at the end of this year. It has been my honour and privilege to work at CUHK Library, and together much has been achieved, not least surviving, indeed thriving, during some remarkable times. As the Librarian I know that I am merely the custodian of the Library and its collections. My job has been to make CUHK Library the best it could be during my tenure and pass it on in good shape to my successor to continue the work. While a successor is sought I know the Library will be in safe hands with the amazing team who work here. Thank you for all the kindness and support I have been shown from the minute I arrived at CUHK in January 2013. I will always remember these nine years with the greatest affection and wish the Library and the University all the best for the future.
