2. A Fully Refreshed Hong Kong Literature Database

Launch of the Beta Version

The Hong Kong Literature Database (HKLD) has been in use for more than two decades since its launched on 15 June 2000. Currently, the database consists of nearly 588,000 records, and its rich content has attracted local and overseas researchers ever since. In 2019, the usage was over 5.6 million. To match the increasing demands of users, the CUHK Library started last year to revamp the HKLD platform and enhance its search capabilities.

The new HKLD is a concise but a user-friendly platform. Its beta version in the first phase will provide the following new features; the search function provides not only basic search but also includes faceted search and search within results, for more refined searching results. With the groundwork done by our Library on collecting pseudonyms of authors, the new HKLD allows a user to search with an author’s different name. Furthermore, users can share search results through email. Hot Rank and Hong Kong literature related activities will also be available in the new platform.

The second phase aims to support digital scholarship. The Library will collaborate with CUHK’s Hong Kong Literature Research Centre and other libraries to establish a Hong Kong Writers Profile. This linked open data platform will display pseudonyms of authors and related biographical data on person, place, and event through queries and visualisations. Moreover, to encourage the reuse of data from HKLD and to facilitate research needs, datasets and digital scholarship tools will be available to registered users in this phase.

As the beta version of the new HKLD is released, the platform that has served for over two decades will be retired by the end of this year.
