I·CARE Hong Kong Cultural Tours Project: Progress Update

Hong Kong is a small place of unique culture which deserves to be savoured and explored.  However rapid the city has changed and developed, it is left with many anecdotes which hold clues to its past.  The I·CARE Hong Kong Cultural Tours Project, which has been conducted for years, aims to facilitate the CUHK students’ discovery of these Hong Kong stories and to offer free cultural tours to serve the needy.  Both groups of people are expected to develop an enhanced sense of identification to this city.

The 28 CUHK students selected for the I·CARE Hong Kong Cultural Tours Project of this academic year have been engaged in a series of professional training since last month.  They were the following seminars held online:

Speaker Topic
Mr. George Wan, founder of Hide and Seek Tour Content research, itinerary design and formulation
Dr. Siu Yan-ho, Department of Chinese, Lingnan University Hong Kong food culture and history
Prof. Cheung Sui-wai, Department of History, CUHK Kowloon history and development of mining
Dr. Au Ka-lun, School of Journalism and Communication, CUHK Story-telling skills

The second phase of training will take place in January and February 2021.  Participants will be guided by experienced instructors to take part in site visits and mock tours to get themselves prepared for serving as actual docents from March to May.  Meanwhile, the participants are developing the tour routes and writing scripts in accordance with the themes below:

  1. Food Culture and History (Sham Shui Po)
  2. The Development of New Towns (Tuen Mun)
  3. The Rise and Fall of Local Mining (Cha Kwo Ling)
  4. Hong Kong’s Light Industries in the Post-war Era (Tsuen Wan)
