The 28 CUHK students recruited for the I·CARE Hong Kong Cultural Tours Project of this academic year have completed a series of professional docent training, which included attending online seminars and taking part in site visits, and finished devising tour routes and writing scripts in team setting. Affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the tour delivery of this project has changed to an online mode through virtual reality technology. The participating CUHK students had then focused on the production of special visual effects of the trips over the past two months, followed by conducting mock tours to practice guiding skills under the supervision of experienced tutors.
With all ducks in a row, the virtual tours arranged for secondary school students have commenced since the middle of this month. So far, 27 schools were confirmed to join the tours. The themes and corresponding districts are as follows:
- Food Culture and History (Sham Shui Po)
- The Development of New Towns (Tuen Mun)
- The Rise and Fall of Local Mining (Cha Kwo Ling)
- Hong Kong’s Light Industries in the Post-war Era (Tsuen Wan)
The virtual tours were well-received by the participating secondary students. They visited various places of Hong Kong through a simple VR headset, which not only enabled them to learn about the history and culture of the city, but also added a bit of fun to their daily routine during the pandemic.
