Personalia (16 March–30 June 2019)

Prof Evelyn CHAN, Associate Professor, Department of English, is on maternity leave from 24 April to 30 July 2019. She gave birth to a healthy baby boy on 14 May 2019. Congratulations!

Dutch Cultural Night

The Dutch Cultural Night, hosted by Prof Evelyn CHAN, Chair of the Committee on College Life, Prof Tjonnie LI, Member of the Committee on College Life and three College exchange students from Dutch universities, was held on 9 April 2019, to introduce students to Dutch culture, history, geography, society and language. Prof CHAN and Prof LI had each lived in the Netherlands for many years, and therefore knew much about the country.

Wine and Cheese Tasting Workshop

Wine and cheese are an important element of some Western countries' culinary cultures, and they can be easily spotted on many social occasions in Hong Kong. To introduce our students to the wine and cheese culture and guide them to enhance their dining experience, the Wine and Cheese Tasting Workshop was hosted by Prof Eugene PONOMAREV, Member of the Committee on College Life, on 19 March 2019.

Cultus et Beneficentia Award 2019

The Cultus et Beneficentia Award was established in 2016 by the College, to be granted to the best student(s) of each graduating class. It aims to recognise students who have demonstrated the spirit of the College in the best way during their normative study periods. It is the highest honour for students of the College.

Hong Kong Cup All Japan University Student Ambassadors English Programme 2018–19

After bidding farewell to Ms Aiko YAMASHITA in early March 2019, the College welcomed three other students of the Hong Kong Cup All Japan University Student Ambassadors English Programme 2018–19 in late March. The programme was organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Tokyo) and The Japan News to encourage university students in Japan to explore the dynamism and rich diversity of Hong Kong. The three students, Mr Kunihiro KODAMA, Ms Niina NOMURA and Ms Akino SHIRANE, resided in the College hostel from 22 to 31 March, during which they joined our students in the following College activities:

Career and Internship Scheme

College Internship Scheme 2019

 

The College Summer Internship Scheme 2019 was open for application in early March 2019. Some 40 summer internship opportunities were sourced from 14 companies/ organisations across various fields, such as accounting, consulting, engineering, finance, hotel services, insurance, marketing, press, programming, research and development and social services. Applications from 23 students were received.

The Professor Julie Hung Hsua Yu Scholarship for Intellectual Excel-leration (2018–19)

The Scholarship (2018–19) was open for application from late January 2019 after the Workshop on Creativity and Introduction of the Scholarship until late March 2019.

Summer Service Project

 

With the generous support from The D. H. Chen Foundation, the College Service Team has launched its service projects smoothly throughout the years and they have positively influenced the lives of both university and secondary school participants of the projects.

High Table Dinners in 2018–19

Fourth High Table Dinner: Driving Systematic Changes in Education (Mr Arnold CHAN)

 

The Fourth and last High Table Dinner in 2018–19 was held on 26 March 2019. For the graduating class of 2019, it was the last College High Table Dinner in their undergraduate studies. To bid farewell to the graduates-to-be and highlight the cultural diversity in the College, the other dinner participants gave them a German-style toast led by the MC, an incoming exchange student from Germany.

Culture and Language Enhancement

Toastmasters Club Taster Sessions

 

The Toastmasters Club Taster Sessions have been organised by the College with the assistance of our student coordinators, to encourage College students to improve public speaking skills through peer sharing of tips on oratory, prepared and impromptu speeches and peer evaluation and support.

Mr LI Chi Chuen Matthew received the Certificate of Appreciation from Ms Tessa STEWART on behalf of the College in the Toastmasters Club Taster Session 6.

Sports

Sports Orienteering Fun Day

 

Orienteering is a group of sports that require participants' navigational skills by using a map and compass to navigate from point to point.
