Inauguration Ceremony of the CUHK Transgenic Core Service Centre (TCSC)

With the coordination and planning by the School of Biomedical Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Science collaborated to establish the CUHK Transgenic Core Service Centre (CUHK-TCSC) aiming to assist investigators to generate transgenic animals for conducting in vivo studies.

School of Biomedical Sciences Postgraduate Research Day 2011
|
With the concerted effort of the Organizing Committee of the Graduate Student Association and the Graduate Education Team, the School of Biomedical Sciences Postgraduate Research Day 2011 was successfully held on 27 and 28 October 2011. This annual flagship event aims to serve as platform for our postgraduate students to interact with and learn from their peers and supervisors.

Frontiers in Biomedical Sciences Seminar Series

Under the coordination of Prof. Yao Xiaoqiang, the "Frontiers in Biomedical Sciences Seminar Series" has been successfully launched since October 2011. This is a monthly series which aims to invite renowned scholars to share with our investigators and postgraduate students their latest research findings, experience and insights in biomedical sciences.

Joint Symposium "Recent Advances in Clinical Genetics Using High Throughput Genomic Technologies"

Jointly organized by the Reproduction, Development and Endocrinology Program of the School of Biomedical Sciences, the CUHK-BGI Innovation Institute of Trans-omics (the Innovation Institute), the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G) of the CUHK, and the Hong Kong Society of Medical Genetics, the symposium on "Recent Advances in Clinical Genetics Using High Throughput Genomic Technologies" was successfully held on 5 December 2011.

The 1st CUHK International Symposium on Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine was successfully held on 6 December 2011. This Symposium was jointly organized by the Stem Cell and Regeneration (SCR) Program of our School, the Center for Stem Cell and Regeneration, CUHK, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Faculty of Medicine, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Sports Medicine and Health Sciences Centre and the Key Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine (The Chinese University of Hong Kong – Jinan University).

Joint Seminar on "Opportunities for Industry-Academia Collaboration: A Win-win"

Further to the last two joint events held on 9 August 2010 and 14 March 2011, the School of Biomedical Sciences and the Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO) co-organized on 13 December 2011 a seminar entitled "Opportunities for Industry-Academia Collaboration: A Win-win" as delivered by Dr. Lily Lee, Senior Vice President, Head of Asia R&D, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Johnson & Johnson.

The SBS Christmas Party 2011 was successfully held on 15 December 2011 at the University Guest House. More than 250 teaching and non-teaching staff members, postgraduate students and invited guests joined this joyous event.

Publication of SBS Annual Report 2010-2011
|
We are most pleased to announce that our SBS Annual Report 2010-2011 (bilingual version) has recently been published. This Report features our School's achievements in different domains (including research, education, academic and community links, etc.) for the period between 1 July 2010 and 30 June 2011. Through this bilingual publication, we hope our stakeholders within and outside the CUHK and the public can understand our School from a wider perspective and become more acquainted with us.

Prof. Wan Chao being Awarded the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Grant - Key Program
|
Prof. Wan Chao was awarded the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) (Key Program) Grant for his joint project with the Shenzhen University School of Medicine entitled "骨關節退行性疾病組織特異性幹細胞功能活性改變及其表觀遺傳學調控", which carried an approved amount of RMB 2.6 million (approximately HK dollar 3.17 million).

Prof. Yung Wing-Ho elected as Member of the Council of the Chinese Neuroscience Society
|
Prof. Yung Wing-Ho was elected as Member of the Council of the Chinese Neuroscience Society at its 5th Election of Council Member Representatives held between 29 July and 1 August 2011. This is a four-year appointment which took effect from October 2011. Prof. Yung is currently the Chief of the Neuro-degeneration, -development and Repair Program of our School.

Dr. Ma Xin received the Best Oral Presentation Award at the 11th Physiology Conference for Zhang Xijun Young Scholars organized by the Chinese Association for Physiological Sciences

Dr. Ma Xin, Post-doctoral Fellow under the supervision of Prof. Yao Xiaoqiang, was awarded the Best Oral Presentation Award during the 11th Physiology Conference for Zhang Xijun Young Scholars organized by the Chinese Association for Physiological Sciences on 22 October 2011 for his presentation on "TRPV4-TRPC1 heteromeric channel: its property and function". The honour that Dr. Ma received reflects the outstanding academic standard of our school members.

Cheng, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, a delegation comprising Prof. Wai-Yee Chan, SBS Director; Prof. Kenneth Lee; Prof. Chao Wan; Ms. Wing Wong, Director, Office of Academic Links (China); Ms. Samantha Wong, Office of Academic Links (China) revisited Jinan University on 7 November 2011 to discuss issues arising from the joint Ministry of Education (MOE) Key Laboratory on Regenerative Medicine.

Return Visit of Robert Gordon University, U.K.
|
Prof. Cherry Wainwright, Director of the Institute for Health & Welfare Research, School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences, Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, U.K. visited our School on 21 November 2011. During the visit, Prof. Wainwright met with Prof. Chan Wai-Yee, SBS Director and Prof. Kenneth K.H. Lee, Chief of Stem Cell and Regeneration (SCR) Program to further discuss research collaborations between our School and Robert Gordon University, subsequent to her last visit in November 2010 and the return visit paid by Prof. Lee in February 2011.

Delegation Visit to Guangzhou

Led by Prof. Joseph J.Y. Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President and coordinated by the Office of Academic Links (China), a 22-member delegation comprising Prof. Jack C.Y. Cheng, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Chan Wai-Yee, SBS Director and a few SBS members including Prof. Fung Kwok-Pui, Prof. Kenneth K.H. Lee; Prof. Wan Chao as well as representatives of various units of CUHK visited Jinan University, Sun Yat-Sen University and Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health (GIBH), Chinese Academy of Sciences on 28 November 2011 to further strengthen academic collaboration with these institutions in Guangzhou.

Mr. Liu Qian, Vice-Minister of Health, led a delegation to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong on 29 November 2011. Apart from meeting with Prof. Jack C.Y. Cheng, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, Mr. Liu and his delegation members also met with our School's representatives including Professors Chan Wai-Yee, C.H. Cho, Christopher H.K. Cheng, Kenneth K.H. Lee, Yung Wing-Ho and Lin Ge.

|
Prof. Fu Xiaobing, Academician, Division of Health Engineering, Chinese Academy of Engineering visited the School of Biomedical Sciences on 7 December 2011. During the visit, Prof. Fu was warmly received by Prof. Chan Wai-Yee, Director and Prof. Li Gang, Deputy Chief of Stem Cell & Regeneration (SCR) Programme, and was arranged to meet with members of our Cancer & Inflammation (C&I) and SCR Programs including Professors Franky L. Chan, Chen Yangchao, Feng Bo, Fung Kwok-Pui, Kenneth K.H. Lee, Lee Tin-Lap, Leung Po-Sing, Kingston K.L Mak, Wan Chao, Xia Yin and Zhao Hui as well as Professor Lu Gang of Department of Surgery, Associate Member of SCR Program.

Lee, Chief of Stem Cell and Regeneration (SCR) Program, Prof. Feng Bo, Prof. Lee Tin-Lap, Prof. Wan Chao, Prof. Xia Yin, Prof. Zhao Hui, Dr. Chen Xiao, Dr. Stanton Kok and Ms. Gu Shen, together with Prof. Vincent Wong of Department of Medicine and Therapeutics attended the 4th Guangzhou International Conference on Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine co-organized by the Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health (GIBH) and the Chinese Society for Cell Biology between 17 and 19 December 2011 at Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center.

ANNOUNCEMENT
Relocation of the School of Biomedical Sciences to Area 39
|
The School of Biomedical Sciences will soon be relocated to the Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building in Area 39, Northside Research Campus in early 2012. Depending on the actual progress, the relocation will start from late January to end February 2012. All our telephone numbers, fax numbers as well as email addresses will remain unchanged and valid throughout and after the relocation period.
