School of Biomedical Sciences Research Day 2016

Officiated by Prof. Francis K.L. Chan, Dean of Medicine and Prof. Chan Wai-yee, Director of the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS), the "SBS Research Day 2016" was successfully held on 2 and 3 June 2016 at the Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The event was well-attended by more than 250 participants, including our School members, associate members from clinical departments and guests from The University of Hong Kong.

The School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) admitted its first cohort of twenty-eight students to the BSc in Biomedical Sciences Programme in September 2016. 
Joint Biomedical Engineering & Biomedical Sciences Mini Symposium: Mechanobiology in Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine

Jointly organized by the School of Biomedical Sciences and the Biomedical Engineering Programme, Faculty of Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), a mini-symposium entitled "Mechanobiology in Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine" was successfully held on 16 August 2016 at Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building, CUHK.
Conference on Cancer: From Biology to Treatment

The School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) participated in the conference "Cancer: From Biology to Treatment" co-organized by Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Erasmus University Medical Centre (Erasmus MC), the Nethelands on 11 May 2016.
Biomedical Research Academy (BioMeRA) for Secondary School Students 2016

Following the first launch in 2015, the Biomedical Research Academy ("BioMeRA") for Secondary School Students 2016, which aimed at providing secondary school students who are interested in biomedical sciences a holistic experience of being a biomedical research student in the campus of CUHK, was successfully organized from 5 July to late August 2016. This year, a total of 10 Form 4 and Form 5 students participated in the programme.
SBS Summer Research Internship Programme 2016

Same as previous years, the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) continued to organize the SBS Summer Research Internship Programme for medical students between June and August 2016. The Programme aimed to provide the participating students with opportunities to expose themselves in real research environment and to acquire hands-on research experience. A total of 22 Year 1 and Year 2 medical students were selected for the Programme under the supervision of 14 investigators of our School this year.
Workshop on eLearning Services: "Experiencing KEEP"

Co-organized by the Teaching and Learning Unit of our School and the Office of Knowledge and Education Exchange Platform (KEEP), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the "Experiencing KEEP" Workshop was successfully held on 30 June 2016.
Laboratory Safety Course for Summer Students and Interns
Same as previous years, a laboratory safety course was organized by the University Laboratory Safety Office on 5 July 2016 for our School's summer students and research interns who would need to carry out research activities in our laboratories.  This prerequisite course was conducted in English, and aimed at introducing the participants the detailed and up-to-date laboratory safety procedures and regulations before they could start conducting experiments in the laboratories.

AWARDS AND HONORS / ANNOUNCEMENTS

Appointment of Prof. Chan Wai-yee as Master-Designate of C.W. Chu College
Prof. Chan Wai-yee
Prof. Chan Wai-yee, Director of School of Biomedical Sciences, has recently been appointed as the Master-Designate of C.W. Chu College.  The appointment was approved by the University Council in June 2016 for a period of four years with effect from 1 January 2017.
Restructuring of Thematic Research Programs in the School of Biomedical Sciences
In order to better respond to the fast-changing research landscape and to continually enhance our research competitiveness, the School of Biomedical Sciences has initiated a comprehensive review on its theme-based model since early 2016, after successful implementation of the five Thematic Research Programs (TRPs) for seven years.  Following rounds of consultation with the stakeholders and members of the School, it was agreed that the number of TRPs be restructured from five to three, with the new Theme Chiefs to be elected among the theme members. The new TRPs and the respective Theme Chiefs are as follows:

Four staff members of the School of Biomedical Sciences have recently received the University's "Long Service Award 2015" in recognition of their long years of service at the University. The awards were presented to the recipients at the "Long Service Award 2015 Presentation Ceremony" held on 6 May 2016.

Dr. Rebecca K.Y. Lee, Lecturer of our School, was presented the "Exemplary Teaching Award in General Education 2015" by the Senate Committee on General Education (SCGE) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) at the award presentation ceremony held on 23 May 2016.  This annual award aims at recognizing teachers who have made exemplary contributions to teaching and learning in General Education in the past two academic years, and is presented to a maximum of three awardees every year.  The official coverage by the Office of University General Education can be viewed HERE.

Formation of Advisory Board on Students' Career and Development

To enhance career development of our undergraduate and postgraduate students, and to maximize their exposure in the related fields of profession before graduation, the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) has newly formed an Advisory Board on Students' Career and Development with core membership comprising representatives from biomedical sciences and biotechnological industries.

Prof. Chan Hsiao-chang and Prof. Ruan Yechun received the First Prize of National Science and Technology Award for Women and Children's Health

Prof. Chan Hsiao-chang and Prof. Ruan Yechun, Professor and Research Assistant Professor of the School have been awarded the First Prize of the "National Science and Technology Award for Women and Children's Health" presented by the Chinese Women and Children Health Research Association (Chinese version only) in China.

Prof. Tian Xiaoyu, Research Assistant Professor of the School, has recently been awarded in the Health and Medical Research Fund (HMRF) Research Fellowship Scheme 2016 by the Food and Health Bureau, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Following the visit to the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) in March 2016, a delegation from the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences of Monash University, Australia comprising Prof. Christina Mitchell, Academic Vice-President and Dean, Prof. Ross Coppel, Senior Deputy Dean/Deputy Dean (Research) and Dr. Svetozar Kovacevic, Director of Research paid another visit to SBS on 12 May 2016.  This was one of the stops of their visit to Faculty of Medicine and Division of Biomedical Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) between 11 and 13 May 2016.

Upon the invitation of the Kunming Institute of Zoology (KIZ), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Prof. Chan Wai-yee, Director of School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS), led a delegation comprising of Prof. Vincent C.K. Cheung, Prof. Eugene Ponomarev, Prof. John Rudd, Prof. Zhao Hui and 14 postgraduate students of the School to participate in the Symposium on Animal Models and Human Disease Mechanisms cum Postgraduate Research Day 2016 from 18 to 21 August 2016. The event was hosted by the Key Laboratory of Animal Models and Human Disease Mechanisms (AMHD), under KIZ, CAS.
The Summer Undergraduate Research Programme 2016

The School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) participated in the Summer Undergraduate Research Programme (SURP) 2016 organized by the Office of Academic Links (OAL), The Chinese University of Hong Kong, from 6 June 2016 to 12 August 2016.  The programme itself is an institutional initiative aiming to encourage international undergraduate students to develop their research skills through undertaking a short-term research attachment at CUHK during the summer.

The School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) joined the Summer Research Placement Programme organized by the Office of Academic Links (China) (OALC) in two consecutive years. A group of eleven undergraduate students with nine of them from the Chongqing Medical University (CQMU), China and two from the Guangdong Ocean University (GDOU), China, were arranged to receive training in our School between 29 June and 17 August 2016.

Following the last career planning talk held in January 2016, the SBS Postgraduate Student Association (PSA) successfully organized another career planning talk with Dr. Alan L.Y. Pang as the speaker on 3 May 2016.

Organized by the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) Postgraduate Student Association (PSA), the Second SBS Photo Competition was successfully held from February to April 2016.

Dr. Liu Xiaozhuo obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 2015 under the joint supervision of Prof. Owen M. Rennert (National Institutes of Health, U.S.A.), Prof. Chan Wai-yee and Prof. Fung Kwok-pui of School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS). He was one of the exchange graduates participating in the CUHK-NIH Graduate Partnership Program, through which he had been enabled to explore cutting-edge research areas in autism spectrum disorder (an early onset neurodevelopmental disorder) and stem cells in the world's premier biomedical research center NIH.
