CAS Academicians Visit Programme 2010

The 3rd Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Academicians Visit Programme was staged at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) from 2 to 6 February.  The delegation of CAS comprised Prof. Li Wei, Professor of Beihang University and Director of State Key Laboratory of Software Development Environment; Prof. Guo Lei, President of Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science; Prof. Chen Hanfu of Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science; Prof. Guo Guangcan, Professor of University of Science and Technology of China and Director of Key Laboratory of Quantum Information; Prof. Zhang Bo, Professor of Computer Science and Technology Department, Tsinghua University; Prof. Chu Junhao of Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics of CAS, Mr. Zhang Xinggen, Director of Hong Kong, Macao & Taiwan Affairs Office of CAS; and Ms Hu Jun from Division Office of Information Technical Sciences & Technological Sciences of CAS.

The delegates were warmly received by Prof. Benjamin Wah, Acting Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor-Designate; Prof. Henry Wong, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Michael Hui, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Prof. Xu Yangsheng, Associate-Pro-Vice-Chancellor. The delegation met with representatives from Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Science, and visited laboratories in the Faculty of Engineering and relevant research centers, learning more about the latest research development of CUHK in science and technology. The representatives from both sides used the opportunity to exchange ideas and build up links.

On 4 February, the academicians delivered public lectures for the Lecture Series by Academicians. They shared their expertise and views of myriad fields covering systems science, quantum information, infrared physics and computer science. The lectures attracted more than 100 people including staff and students from the university community and attendees from the general public.

CUHK launched the "CAS Academicians Visit Programme" since 2008. Under this programme, 5-6 CAS academicians are invited to visit CUHK each year and deliver public lectures in the "Lecture Series by Academicians" to forge academic exchange between the University and CAS. It is hoped that through this project, CUHK can establish closer links with CAS Academicians to further enhance the University's quality of research output.
