2012 Academia Sinica Academicians Visit Programme cum Lecture Series Successfully Held

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) staged the second Academia Sinica (AS) Academicians Visit Programme from 24-27 April to establish closer partnership with AS. Three AS academicians were invited to visit CUHK for academic exchange; they included Prof. Andrew H.-J. Wang, Distinguished Research Fellow, Institute of Biology Chemistry, AS; Prof. Wang Kuan, Director of Institute of Chemistry and Nanomedicine Program, AS; and Prof. Yao Meng-Chao, Distinguished Research Fellow and Director, Institute of Molecular Biology, AS. During the visit, they delivered public lectures at the Lecture Series by Academicians and met with CUHK representatives to discuss collaboration opportunities.

The delegates were warmly received by CUHK officers including Prof. Benjamin Wah, Provost; Prof. Jack Cheng and Prof. Henry Wong, Pro-Vice-Chancellors; Prof. Ng Cheuk Yiu, Dean of Science; Prof. Chu Ka Hou, Director of School of Life Sciences; Prof. Chan Wai Yee, Director of School of Biomedical Sciences; Prof. Shing Kung Ming, Chairman of Department of Chemistry; and Prof. Xia Keqing, Chairman of Department of Physics. The delegation visited related departments in Faculty of Science and School of Biomedical Sciences, and toured research facilities to learn more about the latest research developments of the University. Representatives from CUHK and AS took the opportunity to exchange ideas and had discussions on collaborative plans.

 

The three academicians delivered public lectures in the "Lecture Series by Academicians" to share their experiences and expertise in their respective fields of research on campus. Prof. Andrew Wang gave a talk on "Applications of structural biology in drug discovery and biotechnology"; Prof. Wang Kuan's lecture was entitled "Intrinsically Disordered Proteins: Interplay of Force, Form and Function"; and Prof. Yao Meng-Chao talked about "Guarding the Genome with RNA-directed DNA rearrangements in Tetrahymena". More than 200 people including academics, researchers and students from CUHK and other universities as well as members from the general public, attended the lectures.
