CUHK First Organizes Greater Bay Area Summer School

With the aim of strengthening cooperation and provision of quality education in the Greater Bay Area, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) first established "CUHK Greater Bay Area Summer School" (GBASS) under the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance Summer School Series to offer online credit-bearing courses from 3 to 14 August. Undergraduates studying in the institutions from the Greater Bay Area completed the two-week course and would obtain credits when they meet course requirements.

At the opening ceremony of GBASS held on 3 August, Professor Wong Suk-ying, Associate Vice President of CUHK, delivered a welcoming speech. She hoped that students could experience the fun of knowledge acquisition whilst they broaden their horizons via the summer study and active communication. The first GBASS was held online due to COVID-19. Participating students attended the courses online in real time according to their personal circumstances, and interacted with other students from the Greater Bay Area.

Two participating students’ shared their experience below:

The general education course offered by CUHK let me reflect on the meaning of university education again. I also see how good universities would educate their students. In my opinion, the necessity of general education courses allows everyone to experience the excitement of different subjects, to give more opportunities for students to discover their direction in life. …What I gained during this period is not the knowledge in the texts, but a scientific method of understanding the world.
(Student of "Reading Nature", Zhuang Kaiyao of Sun Yat-Sen University)

When reading Plato's "Symposium", a commentary deeply touched me. It says, “Technology has changed the world, but it is not clear whether it does good or not. Most experts know everything within the scope of their skills, but they may not be able to establish the connection between science and people's life.” …I am very grateful to CUHK for providing such a platform for us to calm down and think about some philosophical issues.
(Student of "Reading Humanities", Chen Kehuan from Jinan University)
