10. Feature: Welcome New and Returning Users!

Welcome you all! In addition to visiting the ITSC website, you can stay informed of our news and service updates by reading this ITSC Digest.

Information for New Users
To make you get started with ease, we have prepared a quick starter guide with some must-do and must-known items regarding IT resources and services.

Information for Returning Users
Over the past few months, ITSC has made several changes on our services to get well prepared for the new academic year. Here are the service updates:

1. CU eLearning System (Blackboard Learn) Upgrade

The CU eLearning System (Blackboard Learn) was upgraded to SP11 on 21 Jul 2013. It brings users some enhancements and new features while majority of the functions remain the same.

2. Cease of Moodle Service & Retirement of CUForum

With the implementation of CU eLearning System (Blackboard Learn), support given to Moodle and CUForum will cease on 31 Aug 2013.  This is as part of the University eLearning strategy to centralize resource for supporting only one single eLearning system. The centralization to one eLearning system has been started in 2010. For details, please refer to eLearning System Review.

Moodle
No new course sites will be created on Moodle to support teaching under 2013-14 academic year.  However, the system will still be accessible by staff and students in 2013-14 academic year to allow time for them to download any old materials they have on Moodle to their local computers if they wish to.

CUForum
With effect from 31 Aug 2013, all accounts in CUForum System will be suspended and users will not be able to access the system anymore.  Users should download any old materials they have on CUForum to their local computers if they wish to.

3. Restriction on Connecting Campus Computers from Off-campus

To further enhance campus network security, if you are off-campus and need to access your campus computer with the following protocols, please run a VPN connection to make a successful access.

  • RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol)
  • SMB (Server Message Block)

4. Migration of Student E-mail to Public Cloud

Check the project website for an update. Should you have any comments, please write to ITSC Electronic HelpDesk at https://helpdesk.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk/group/cug .

Our warmest good wishes to you for a happy and fulfilling year!
