President of CAS delivers Distinguished Lecture at CUHK
Professor Bai Chunli, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) delivered a Distinguished Lecture during his visit at CUHK on 8 November. The topic was "New Trends in Innovation and Technology Development: China and the World" which was well-attended by over 200 scholars, students, alumni and members of the public.
As the leader of the state academic institution in science and technology, Professor Bai introduced the process, achievements and deficiencies of technology development in Mainland China. He further explained the objectives and main deployment of innovation-driven development strategy, analyzed the global innovation and technology trends and characteristics. He also envisaged the future cooperation between CUHK and CAS.
Professor Bai is a world-renowned nanotechnology expert. In 2010, he became the first Chinese scientist to receive the contribution award for nanoscience and nanotechnology development from UNESCO. In 2015, CUHK conferred upon him the Degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, in recognition of his significant contributions. Please refer to the University Press for details.

CUHK Co-organizes Public Lecture by CAS Academicians
Hosted by The Chinese Academic of Sciences (CAS), organized by Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health of CAS and co-organized by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the "Public Lecture by CAS Academicians" was held at The Hong Kong Science Park on 8 November.
Professor Bai Chunli, President of CAS and Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK officiated at the opening ceremony of the lecture. Three renowned CAS academicians were invited to share insights with over a hundred teachers and students from both tertiary institutions and colleges. They included Professor Ouyang Ziyuan from Division of Earth Sciences, Professor Zhou Qi from Division of Life Sciences and Medical Sciences and Professo Xie Zhouwei, also the Interim Faculty Dean of Science of CUHK.
The "Public Lecture by CAS Academicians" was first held in Hong Kong, recognized as one of the key activities of the "CAS Science and China" series. On the basis of solid cooperation, CUHK and CAS once again joined hands to organize academic activities, together promoting the spirit of science and popularizing scientific knowledge which again strengthened the bilateral multi-disciplinary partnership at different levels.

President Qiu Yong of Tsinghua University was conferred Doctor of Science, honoris causa by CUHK
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) held its 86thCongregation for the Conferment of Degrees on 29 November. Professor Qiu Yong, President of Tsinghua University was conferred Doctor of Science, honoris causa for his remarkable contribution in computational studies on chemistry research.
President Qiu is a outstanding scientist and has been actively promoting the development of national research and higher education. He was appointed the Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Science of CUHK in June 2017. During his stay in CUHK, Professor Qiu met with Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK to discuss on scaling new areas in research collaboration.
Since CUHK's establishment of a partnership with Tsinghua in 1985, both universities have been involved in concerted efforts ranging from national research collaboration and joint research units to curriculum development and student exchange.
