The 3rd Academia Sinica Academicians Visit Programme cum Lecture Series
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) staged the third Academia Sinica (AS) Academicians Visit Programme from 28 April to 1 May 2014 to establish closer partnership with AS. Three AS academicians from the Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences were invited to visit CUHK for academic exchange; including Prof. Liu Chung-Laung, Honorary Chair Professor, Taiwan Tsing Hua University; Prof. Norden E. Huang, K.T. Lee Chair Professor and Director of Center for Adaptive Data Analysis, Taiwan Central University; and Prof. Liu Chao-Han, Distinguished Visiting Scholar, Academia Sinica.
The delegates were warmly received by CUHK officers including Prof. Benjamin Wah, Provost and Prof. Henry Wong, Dean of Science. The delegation visited the Departments of Computer Science and Engineering, Geography and Resource Management, Institute of Space and Earth Information Science, Institute of Environment, Energy and Sustainability at CUHK, and toured research facilities to learn more about the latest research developments of the University. During the visits, the academicians met with relevant faculty members to exchange ideas and explore possibilities for further collaboration.
The three academicians delivered public lectures in the "Lecture Series by Academicians" to share their experiences and expertise in their respective fields of research on 29 April 2014. The lectures attracted participants including academics, researchers and students from CUHK and other universities as well as members from the general public. Details of the lectures are as below:

Gathering of Visiting Scholars and Students
The Office of Academic Links (China) [OALC] launched the Mainland and Taiwan Visiting Scholar Scheme and Research Training Programme for Mainland and Taiwan Students to forge academic exchange and promote research collaboration between The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and its partner institutions in Mainland China and Taiwan in 2008 and 2011 respectively. A gathering of visiting scholars and students was organized by OALC on 17 April 2014. Scholars and students participating in the programs from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University and Zhejiang University joined the gathering. They shared ideas about University life and everyone enjoyed the exchange.
Details of the visiting scholar scheme and research training program are set out below:
A. Mainland and Taiwan Visiting Scholar Scheme
To encourage academic exchange between academic members of CUHK and from Mainland China and Taiwan, Office of Academic Links (China) [OALC] has launched the Mainland and Taiwan Visiting Scholar Scheme, aiming at developing effective platform of communication to pave the way for future cooperation.
This is a two-way academic exchange scheme. For incoming scholars, whist the host department of the University will arrange visit schedule and activities for the visiting scholar, OALC will provide logistic support such as issuing invitation letter, helping with visa permit application, arranging accommodation, liaison work, providing visit guides, issuing relevant certifying letters for using the campus facilities and arranging arrival orientation and insurance etc.
For outgoing CUHK staff members, OALC will render assistance such as liaising with the host institutions and providing consultation service.
Eligibility
1. Incoming scholars: Applicants must be an academic staff or a post-doctoral fellow. The proposed visit shall be initiated by an academic department of CUHK; or initiated by scholars from CUHK partner institutions in Mainland China and Taiwan including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Sun Yat-sen University, China University of Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Agricultural University, Peking University, Taiwan University, Taiwan Central University, Xian Jiaotong University, Nanjing University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University, Tsinghua University and Fudan University.
2. Outgoing academic members: Applicants must be full-time academic staff in CUHK. The proposed visit shall be initiated by the applicant or an academic department of CUHK. The visit shall be paid to CUHK partner institutions in Mainland China and Taiwan.
Duration of the Visit: 30 days or more
Nature of Exchange: Visits under this scheme must be in collaborative nature. Exchange activities may include academic visits, attending seminars/meetings, participating in lectures and collaboration on research projects. Visiting scholars shall not be engaged in any provision of services and/or discharge of professional duties that may be construed as an employment. They shall also observe and comply with all applicable laws in Hong Kong.

B. Visiting Student Programme for Mainland and Taiwan Students
OALC launched the Visiting Student Programme for Mainland and Taiwan Students to forge close links and promote research collaboration between CUHK and its partner institutions in Mainland China and Taiwan in December 2011. Administrative support is provided to the academic units in receiving incoming students for research placement in CUHK.
The host department of the University will arrange visit schedule and activities for the mainland or Taiwan student. OALC will provide logistic support such as issuing invitation letter, helping with entry permit application, arranging accommodation, internal and external liaison, providing visit guides, arranging arrival orientation and insurance etc.
Eligibility: Applicants must be undergraduate or postgraduate Mainland or Taiwan university students. The proposed visit shall be initiated by an academic department of CUHK; or initiated by academic members of CUHK partner institutions in Mainland China and Taiwan.
Duration of the Visit: 30 days or more
Nature of Exchange: Visits under this scheme must be in collaborative nature. Exchange activities may include academic visits, attending seminars/meetings, participating in collaboration on research projects.
