CUHK, Nanjing University and Taiwan Central University have been collaborating closely in various academic and research areas. The Green University Consortium is established as a vehicle for tripartite support and planning to enhance the partnership of the three universities in environmental protection and sustainable development, combining green ideas with research and education. In the ceremony, Prof. Sung, Prof. Chen and Prof. Chiang signed the collaboration agreement on behalf of the universities. Prof. Sung read the Green Declaration of the participating universities, pledging to work hand in hand to support the mission of sustainability in the universities and to our society.
CUHK has been devoting to environmental protection for many years in the areas of energy saving and carbon reduction, water saving and paper reduction, ecological conservation and green education. The University has been honored by the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence (HKAEE) in the past two consecutive years, including the silver award in 2008 and the gold award among some 400 participating organizations in 2009.
Prof. Joseph Sung expressed that CUHK will continue to maintain its efforts in environmental protection and education, and to build a sustainable campus with more innovative projects. "Apart from strengthening the role as a green campus, we shall spare no efforts in reaching out to the community to promote sustainable development." Prof. Sung said.
Guests from Hong Kong, Mainland China and Taiwan witnessed this historical moment. The establishment of the Green University Consortium showcased the collaborative efforts of the higher education institutions from Hong Kong, Taiwan and the mainland in pursuing teaching excellence, nurturing next generation and serving the community toward the enhancement of the living environment of the society.
