CUHK Vice-Chancellor Joins Cross-Strait Meeting for University Presidents in Qinghai
Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), participated in the 14th Cross-Strait Meeting for University Presidents from July 29 to August 3. The activity was held in Qinghai University with participating university leaders from 30 institutions in Hong Kong, Macau, mainland China and Taiwan, as well as representatives from the National People's Congress, and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
Presidents of the participating universities shared their experience in university education and management, as well as the challenges encountered during the activities. They also gained a better understanding about Qinghai's recent developments through visits to Qinghai University on its teaching and research updates, natural reserves and folk and religious spots in Qinghai. The visits and discussion meetings provided participants with opportunities of exchange and interaction, while establishing stronger links with one another.
Initiated by the Peking University, Nanjing University, National Taiwan University and China Democratic League in 2005, the cross-strait meeting is well received by a variety of well-acclaimed universities in the four regions. The annual event has been held at different universities in Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan since 2005.
CUHK Vice-Chancellor Visits SIAT of CAS
Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), led a university delegation to visit the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on August 22. Accompanying in the delegation were former Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Professor Liu Pak-wai; Professor Qin Ling, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology; Professor Heng Pheng-ann, Department of Computer Science and Engineering; Professor Xu Jianbin, Department of Eletronic Engineering; and Professor Zhang Li, Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering.
The delegates held meetings with Professor Fan Jianping, Director of SIAT; Professor Yang Jianhua, Party Secretary of SIAT; Professor Lv Jiancheng and Professor Xu Jianguo, Deputy Directors of SIAT; and Professor CP Wong, former Dean of Engineering of CUHK. Professor Fan and colleagues introduced to the guests the growth and development of SIAT in the past 12 years, before leading them to tour the laboratory facilities of the Institute to learn about the establishment of advanced experimental platforms in various fields. Both sides also shared their fruitful results yielded in their recent research at the working meeting. Professor Tuan recognized the long history of CUHK-SIAT collaboration and the outstanding research output and achievements, which shall be further enhanced in establishment of research teams, transfer and transformation of research outputs, as well as integration of science and education. He also raised hope that under the initiative of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, CAS, CUHK and Shenzhen Government shall work closely in promoting technological breakthroughs and actualizing research achievements specifically in areas of brain science, synthetic biology, electronic materials and smart technologies.
Co-established by CUHK, CAS and Shenzhen Municipal Government in February 2006, SIAT is the first national research unit with the involvement of overseas institution and the only national research institute in Shenzhen. The three parties renewed another five-year collaboration agreement last year for SIAT, which now consists of eight research institutes, alongside various incubators for specialty industries, industrial development foundations and professional research units, to promote regional and national developments of innovation and advanced technology.
