Prof. Zhang Donggang, Deputy Director of Department of Social Science of Ministry of Education visited the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) for academic exchange from 5 to 7 May, 2010. He was accompanied by academics from Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) including Prof. Chen Chunsheng, Vice President of SYSU, Prof. Liu Zhiwei and Prof. Li Zhongfei.
Prof. Zhang and the visiting delegation received a warm welcome in CUHK. On 6 May, they met with Prof. Jack Cheng, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Hsiung Ping-chen, Dean of Arts, and representatives from History Department to acquire more information about CUHK, especially the development of Arts Faculty and research work in Chinese Studies which is one of the five focused areas of research in the University. Guests had the opportunity to discuss education development in the area of humanities and social science, the curriculum and applied research. In the afternoon, Prof. Zhang delivered an academic lecture entitled "Food Structure and Nutrient Frame: An Empirical Analysis of China's National Social Life in the 1920s and 1930s". On 7 May, Prof. Zhang attended the launching ceremony of University Grants Committee Areas of Excellence Scheme: The Historical Anthropology of Chinese Society Project, as an officiating guest. Other CUHK representatives included Pro-Vice-Chancellors Prof. Jack Cheng and Prof. Henry N.C. Wong; Prof. Hsiung Ping-chen, Dean of Arts of CUHK; Prof. Leung Yuen-sang, Chairman of Department of History; and Prof. David Faure, Wei Lun Professor of History. The Historical Anthropology of Chinese Society Project which will involve CUHK, HKUST and SYSU, has obtained approval of funding from the University Grants Committee in the Areas of Excellence (AoE) Scheme. This is the first time AoE has allocated funding to a Humanity and Social Sciences project. |
