Cross-Strait Symposium on Biomedical Sciences cum SBS Postgraduate Research Day 2016

With the concerted efforts of the Organizing Committee of the SBS Postgraduate Research Day 2016, the SBS Postgraduate Student Association (PSA) and the Graduate Education Office, the Cross-Strait Symposium on Biomedical Sciences cum SBS Postgraduate Research Day 2016 was successfully held on 10 – 11 November 2016.

CUHK Medicine 35th Anniversary Distinguished Lecture Series: Dr. Constantine Stratakis and Prof. Natalia Prevarskaya
|
Following the success of the distinguished scholar's lectures held at the School on 12 April 2016 and 20 April 2016, the School invited Dr. Constantine Stratakis and Prof. Natalia Prevarskaya to visit us between 11 – 13 October 2016 and 21 – 22 December 2016, respectively, with the support from the CUHK Medicine 35th Anniversary Distinguished Lecture Series.

Mini-conference and Workshops on Advancement in 3D Scaffold and μContact Fluidic Printings in Regenerative Medicine

Organized by the Ministry of Education (MoE) Key Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine, the mini-conference on "Advancement in 3D Scaffold and μContact Fluidic Printings in Regenerative Medicine" was successfully held on 12 – 14 December 2016 at the School of Biomedical Sciences.

On 25 September 2016, the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) participated in the Faculty of Medicine's 35th Anniversary Gala Dinner held at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

SBS Christmas Party 2016
|
The SBS Christmas Party 2016 (the Party) was successfully held on 12 December 2016 at C.W. Chu College. About 300 teaching and non-teaching staff members, students and invited guests participated in the Party.

1st Meeting for the Advisory Board on Students' Career and Development
|
Following the establishment of the Advisory Board on Students' Career and Development (the Advisory Board) of the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) in September 2016, its first meeting was convened at our School on 5 December 2016.

Press Conferences Introducing New Research Findings by SBS Members
|
Prof. Lee Tin-lap, Deputy Chief, the Developmental and Regenerative Biology (DRB) Program of the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS), together with Prof. Li Tin-chiu, Professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, held a press conference on 29 November 2016. In the press conference, the professors shared with the public the world's first comprehensive study on ovum ageing and female infertility by using single-cell genomics technology, followed by announcing the launch of a community oocyte donation programme.

Inauguration Ceremony for Biomedical Sciences Students
|
Coordinated by the BSc in Biomedical Sciences Programme Office and with the support of the SBS Postgraduate Student Association, the Inauguration Ceremony for our new BSc and RPg Biomedical Sciences students was successfully organized on 5 September 2016. A total of 28 students of the new BSc Programme and 19 new RPg students, together with 23 academic and teaching staff attended the ceremony. During the event, Prof. Chan Wai-yee, the School Director of SBS, gave a brief introduction of the School, followed by introduction of teachers and presentation of welcome gifts to students.

Similar to previous year, members of our Teaching and Learning (T&L) Unit actively participated in the Teaching and Learning Innovation EXPO 2016 (EXPO 2016) on 16 December 2016.

Seminar on Animal Experimentation and Ethics at CUHK
|
To reinforce the concept of proper and ethical usage of animals in biomedical research and the associated experimentations, our Graduate Education Team and the Core Laboratories Team once again coordinated with the Laboratory Animal Services Centre (LASEC) of the Faculty of Medicine to organize a seminar entitled "Animal Experimentation and Ethics at CUHK" on 14 October 2016, as part of the lecture series for postgraduate students at the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS).

Establishment of "Dr. Clement Chan Scholarship"
|
The School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) was pleased to have received a donation of HKD1 million from Dr. Clement Chan on 6 October 2016 for the establishment of "Dr. Clement Chan Scholarship". The scholarship will be awarded to postgraduate students who have made conscientious effort in serving SBS Postgraduate Student Association and to BSc in Biomedical Sciences students with good academic achievements in aging or regenerative biology research.

Dr. Zhou Jingying, a Post-doctoral Fellow of the School of Biomedical Sciences, received the "National Scholar Award" in the United European Gastroenterology (UEG) Week 2016 held at Vienna, Austria between 15 and 19 October 2016.

Mr. Yan Mingfei, a Year 4 Ph.D. student winning the "Best Oral Presentation Award" in the Frontier in Cancer Science 2016

Mr. Yan Mingfei, Year 4 Ph.D. student of the School of Biomedical Sciences, has recently won the "Best Oral Presentation Award" in the Frontier in Cancer (FCS) 2016 held between 7 and 9 November 2016 in Singapore.

On the invitation of Jinan University, several members of the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) attended the 1st Academic Committee Meeting of the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine (The Chinese University of Hong Kong – Jinan University) (the MOE Key Laboratory) on 19 September 2016.

Prof. Matthew Walters, Head of School / Professor of Clinical Pharmacology, Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences, and Prof. Tom Evans, International Lead, College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, The University of Glasgow, visited the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) on 22 September 2016.

Delegation Visit from Guangdong Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine
|
Following the mutual visits in March 2016, the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) and Guangdong Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (GD-TCM) have established "The GD-TCM & SBS Translational Collaborative Innovation Grant 2016-17" for promoting research collaboration between the two institutions. Our PIs and their collaborative partners in GD-TCM jointly submitted collaborative research proposals for obtaining this new grant. On 30 September 2016, Prof. Lue Yu-bo, Founding President of Guangdong Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (GD-TCM) Group led a delegation to visit SBS and attended the presentation sessions on the selected collaborative research projects conducted by the respective research teams.

Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of The Chinese University of Hong Kong – University of Southampton Joint Laboratory for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine

Having gained better understanding after several mutual visits between the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the University of Southampton (UOS) since 2011, Prof. Joseph J. Y. Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President of the CUHK and Prof. Sir Christopher Snowden, President and Vice-Chancellor of UOS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on establishing the CUHK-UOS Joint Laboratory for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine on 13 October 2016.

Guangdong-Hong Kong Postgraduate Research Exchange and Symposium on Regenerative Medicine 2016

Following last year's participation, a delegation comprising Prof. Chan Wai-yee, Director of School of Biomedical Sciences, Prof. Wan Chao, Associate Professor, Prof Zhao Hui, Assistant Professor as well as 19 research staff and postgraduate students took part in the Guangdong-Hong Kong Postgraduate Research Symposium on Regenerative Medicine 2016 held on 9 December 2016 at Jinan University, Guangzhou.

Led by Prof. Chan Wai-yee, Director of SBS, a 22-member delegation including Prof. Feng Bo, Prof. Jiang Xiaohua, Prof. Wan Chao, Prof. Zhao Hui, Prof. Lu Gang and Prof. Albert H.H. Cheung, as well as research staff, postgraduate students and Prof. Rocky S. Tuan, Director of the Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine of CUHK, participated in the 9th Guangzhou International Conference on Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine and the 5th Annual Conference of Chinese Society for Regenerative Cell Biology held from 19-21 December 2016 in Guangzhou, China.

Being one of the participants of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) – National Institutes of Health (NIH) Graduate Partnership Program, Dr. Sophie S.S. Liu obtained her Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Sciences in 2016 under the joint supervision of Prof. Chan Wai-yee of the School of Biomedical Sciences and Dr. Constantine Stratakis of NIH, U.S.A..
