Insecure VPNs allow attackers to compromise your passwords and devices

A recent research project, led by Prof. Sze Yiu Chau from the Department of Information Engineering, found that many VPN setups around the globe are insecure. The discovered vulnerabilities allow a network attacker, such as a rogue hotel or café Wi-Fi operator, to easily and stealthily obtain the passwords of users when they attempt to connect to their organizational VPNs. Additionally, some vulnerabilities even enable hackers to take over control of the user's device, which can cause additional damages.
Hydrotropic solubilization of zinc acetates for sustainable aqueous battery electrolytes

A research team led by Professor Lu Yi-chun in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at CUHK has taken a critical step forward in creating a high-performance, eco-friendly electrolyte for aqueous zinc batteries. The team applied a strategy from pharmaceutical science to increase drug solubility, solving the problems of aqueous zinc batteries’ short life span by enabling highly concentrated zinc acetate electrolytes, a halogen-free zinc salt. The breakthrough was recently published in the world-leading scientific journal Nature Sustainability, a sister journal of Nature.
