IE PhD Alumnus He Kaiming wins 2023 Future Science Prize

Dr. He Kaiming, an alumnus of the IE PhD program in 2011, has been awarded the 2023 Future Science Prize in mathematics and computer science for his groundbreaking contributions to artificial intelligence through his work on deep residual learning. The Future Science Prize is a privately-funded science award initiated by a group of scientists and entrepreneurs to celebrate the accomplishments of scientists who have made extraordinary scientific contributions. The prize is awarded to achievements that have made significant global impacts, are original with long-term importance, or have passed the test of time, and are completed mainly in the Mainland of China, Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan.

Dr. He shares the prize in mathematics and computer science with three other recipients: Sun Jian (late), Ren Shaoqing, and Zhang Xiangyu, with whom he worked closely between 2012 and 2016 at Microsoft Research Asia in Beijing. He was supervised by Professor Sean Tang during his PhD study in Information Engineering at CUHK.

Dr. He's work on deep residual learning has had a significant impact on the field of artificial intelligence. Deep residual learning has allowed neural networks to utilize unprecedented depths and unlock capabilities that previously deemed unachievable. Deep residual learning has been extensively adopted across many applications, paving the way for numerous breakthroughs such as AlphaGo, AlphaFold, and ChatGPT.
