| 2013 Gordon Research Conference on Germinal Stem Cell Biology | |
The Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Germinal Stem Cell Biology was successfully held at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) from 14 to 19 July 2013. Prof. Chan Wai-yee, Director of School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS), served as the Chair of the Conference, while Prof. Lee Tin-lap, Associate Professor of SBS, and Dr. Gu Shen, a graduate of SBS, served as a speaker and special session presenter of the event respectively. |

| PEF Experience Sharing: Bridging Innovation and Commercialization – Journey to BioPharma Asia 2013 | |

Prof. Christopher H.K. Cheng, Prof. Mary W.Y. Waye, Prof. David C.C. Wan and Prof. Chen Yangchao of our School, who had participated in the BioPharma Asia Convention 2013 in Singapore in March 2013, were invited to join the "Professional Enhancement Fund Experience Sharing Seminar: Bridging Innovation and Commericalization – Journey to BioPharma Asia 2013" as arranged by the Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO) on 14 May 2013.

| Energy Saving Talk | |
In support of the University's 2013 Energy Conservation Plan, Mr. Jor J.C. Fan and Mr. Godwin K.W. Lai of the Estates Management Office (EMO) were invited to give an energy-saving talk on 14 May 2013 at the Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building. The talk aimed to share with our School members some tips on energy saving and to recommend some energy-saving measures for implementation within our School.

Four of our School members have been awarded the "National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) grants 2013", which grossed a total of RMB2.47million (approximately HKD3.12million).

Prof. Christopher H.K. Cheng has recently been appointed by the Secretary for the Environment as a member of the Expert Group under the Genetically Modified Organisms (Control of Release) Ordinance for a period of two years with effect from 20 June 2013.

Prof. Kwan Yiu-wa has recently been appointed as Guest Professor at National Engineering Research Center for the Development of New Drugs, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, China with effect from 29 May 2013 for a period of three years. The appointment showcases Prof. Kwan's outstanding contributions in the field of drug research and development.

Ms. Sophie S.S. Liu, Year 2 Ph.D. student has recently won the Merit Prize of the Professor Charles K. Kao Student Creativity Award 2013 (Postgraduate Individual Entry) for her project "Investigation of Effect of Protein Kinase A on Multipotency of Bone Marrow Stromal Cells in Adult Skeleton with the Help of a Three-Dimensional-Gel Cell Culture System". The Prize Presentation Ceremony was held on 27 May 2013.

Following the previous mutual visits, Prof. Chan Wai-yee, Director of the School of Biomedical Sciences and Prof. Ma Jin-loong, Head of Shandong Reproductive Hospital, Shandong University signed a Memorandum of Understanding on establishing The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)-Shandong University (SDU) Joint Laboratory on Reproductive Genetics on 9 June 2013.
