Reimaging and Reorganization: ICS Moves Forward |
In the Strategic Plan 2006 of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Chinese studies has been identified as one of the five key areas for strategic research investment. The Institute of Chinese Studies has entered the new stage to shoulder the new mission. In 2011, it was reorganized with the goal of broadening the remit of ICS to include Chinese studies broadly defined. ICS Director features and elaborates the new development of ICS.

The Snake in Chinese Art |
The Art Museum has mounted a small-scale 'snake' exhibition to celebrate the Year of the Snake. The exhibits were selected from the museum and private collections, and included bronzes, rubbings, ceramics, paintings and jade, spanning the period from the Warring States to the Qing Dynasty. Three of the selected exhibits are described below and offer the reader a fascinating glimpse of the snake in Chinese art and culture. |

Prehistoric Barkcloth Research |
Over the past two decades, the Centre for Chinese Archaeology and Art has conducted research into barkcloth, prehistoric jades and early rotary technologies, and has earned international academic interest. Barkcloth is a non-woven fabric that is primarily made by beating the fibrous inner bark of suitable trees. Widely used across the tropics until the sixteenth century, it is still a defining feature of Austronesian material and spiritual culture in the Pacific islands.

- Welcome to new ICS Constituent Unit—Universities Service Centre for China Studies
The Universities Service Centre for China Studies (USC) has become a constituent unit of the ICS with effect from 1 April 2013. The USC was established in 1963 and was formerly known as the "Mecca for China Studies". It joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1988 and was renamed the Universities Service Centre for China Studies (USC) in 1993. It is currently led by Professor Chan Kin-man. The USC organizes regular luncheon talks and informal gatherings with the objective of encouraging intellectual exchange among Hong Kong and mainland Chinese and international scholars. The USC also provides library services with an extensive and accessible collection of a great variety of materials on contemporary China. |

- Public Lecture by Edward Shaughnessy, ICS Visiting Professor
The ICS and the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies jointly presented a public lecture by Professor Edward Shaughnessy on 14 March 2013. The keynote of Professor Shaughnessy's lecture was "A Special Use of the Character 鄉 in Oracle Bone Inscriptions and Its Significance for the Meaning of Early Chinese Divination: With Comments on the First Line of the Yi Jing."
- The Third International Symposium on CSL Teaching and Learning
The Symposium is organized by the Yale-China Chinese Language Centre, Chinese University of Hong Kong. It is a major event for the Centre's fiftieth anniversary celebrations and is also part of the University's fiftieth anniversary celebratory event. All interested parties are welcome to come and share their views on Chinese language teaching and learning on this special occasion.
- Workshop on the Syntax of Ellipsis
The workshop is organized by the T. T. Ng Chinese Language Research Centre. Four invited speakers will focus on ellipsis in natural languages under a comparative approach and its syntactic derivation in the generative framework. All interested parties are welcome.
