Through the signature tour in absolute darkness, and with the assistance and support of a well-trained blind guide, 16 students navigated through an environment simulating the real life of a blind person—a simple task of walking straight proved immensely difficult.
Participants described an after-tour sharing with the guide as mind-blowing. As they understood one another better, they developed a sense of mutual respect. Never had they realised the blessing of simply being able to see. 'Never take anything for granted'—perhaps that summarises it the best.
Tie-Dyeing Workshop
Miss POON Ka Yan and Mr LI Yuet Man, Resident Tutors, organised a Tie-Dyeing Workshop on 14 March 2017, in order to develop students' awareness of environmental protection, and encourage them to adopt an environmentally-friendly lifestyle. The workshop was hosted by three experienced instructors from Eco-education and Resources Centre. They introduced the technique of tying and dyeing in an environmental-friendly way and the idea of 'Upcycling'. All student participants were given an opportunity to tie and dye two handkerchiefs to showcase their skills acquired. CUHK Blood Donation Campaign 2017
As a part of CUHK Blood Donation Campaign 2017 co-organised by the Office of Student Affairs and Hong Kong Red Cross, a Blood Donor Station was set up at CW Chu College on 31 March 2017. Twenty members of staff and students from the College joined the campaign. We look forward to seeing more participants next year!Exploring the Central and Western Heritage Trail
With a view to exploring some historic buildings and sites in Hong Kong, understanding and appreciating their historical significance, and fostering cultural exchange among local and non-local students, Miss MA Ming Yan, Resident Tutor, organised on 1 April 2017 an activity to explore a heritage trail in the Central and Western District. Guided by a docent from The Antiquities and Monuments Office, they walked along the Central Route. The kind and friendly docent provided a very informative account in both English and Mandarin of the history of the monuments. The students gained understanding of how Central, a historically significant area, has grown and developed over the years.
Sweet Soup Boost & Fruit Sharing
As a joint initiative of the nine colleges to show warmth and care to all hostel students under the mental health promotion campaign organised by the University, CW Chu College participated in the 'Take a Sweet Break' campaign and held a Sweet Soup Boost. The College distributed free black glutinous rice with coconut milk to the students at the last Communal Dinner of the academic year on 20 April 2017. To make the event environmentally friendly, the students were invited to bring their own utensils.
As a complement to the Sweet Soup Boost, the College organised Fruits Sharing, sponsored by Dean of Students, Prof Thomas AU. Bananas, apples and grapes were provided at the Communal Dinner. The students all enjoyed the sweet soups and the fruits with their College mates!
