Public Lecture by Edward Shaughnessy, ICS Visiting Professor The ICS and the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies jointly presented a public lecture by Professor Edward Shaughnessy on 14 March 2013. The keynote of Professor Shaughnessy's lecture was "A Special Use of the Character 鄉 in Oracle Bone Inscriptions and Its Significance for the Meaning of Early Chinese Divination: With Comments on the First Line of the Yi Jing." Professor Edward Shaughnessy has been appointed as an ICS Visiting Professor for the academic year 2013-2014. He is currently the Department Chair of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, University of Chicago, and Lorraine J. and Herrlee G. Creel Distinguished Service Professor of Early China. His research expertise lies in the cultural and literary history of the Zhou period, and he is committed to the study of its archaeologically recovered textual materials, from oracle-bone and bronze inscriptions through to the bamboo-strip manuscripts. The Symposium is organized by the Yale-China Chinese Language Centre, Chinese University of Hong Kong. It is a major event for the Centre's fiftieth anniversary celebrations and is also part of the University's fiftieth anniversary celebratory event. All interested parties are welcome to come and share their views on Chinese language teaching and learning on this special occasion. The 3rd International Symposium on CSL Teaching and Learning is organized by the Yale-China Chinese Language Center, Chinese University of Hong Kong. The theme of the Symposium is "Theories and Practices in the Training of Pragmatic Abilities". The Symposium Committee invites distinguished international scholars to share their research outcomes, with reference to their applications in CSL teaching. Presentations by invited speakers and discussion sessions will cover the theories and practices used to facilitate the development of pragmatic ability in language use. The Symposium is co-organized by the Research Centre for Chinese Linguistics of the Department of Chinese and the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages. He received a BA summa cum laude in mathematics from Columbia University in 1964, a PhD in linguistics from MIT in 1969, a Doctorat ès Lettres from the University of Paris VIII in 1976, and honorary doctorates from the University of Leiden in 1995 and the University of Bucharest in 2011. He has taught at the University of Paris VIII, MIT and the CUNY Graduate Center, and is currently Silver Professor of Linguistics at New York University.
