Communal Dinner Talks

CW Chu College has organized a series of dinner talks for students, in which distinguished scholars from all walks of life are invited for a sharing on life experiences or interests. The dinner talks provide students with a relaxing atmosphere to learn more. Since the last Newsletter and up to the end of Term 1, the following talks have been given.

Topic: Chungking
Mansions and what it can teach us about national education in Hong Kong

On 26 September 2012, Professor Gordon Mathews spoke on Chungking Mansions — the topic of his field research for many years, and an interesting and unusual example of globalization in our midst.  He also used the phenomenon of a congenial and energetic mix of people from many countries to raise questions about national identity and national education.

Topic: Finance: a more profitablecareer than other professions?

The College also invited Professor Chak Wong to talk on 'Finance: a more profitablecareer than other professions?' during the communal dinner on 10 October 2012. Professor Wong shared his experience in study and in his career in the finance industry. The key point of his talk was to query the assumption that may be conveyed by the title and to rebut some common misconceptions.

On 24 October 2012, Professor Esther Cheung of HKU spoke on 'Hong Kong as an (In)visible City', through showing many photos and pictures by modern hands during the communal dinner.

Mr Lam Chun Kwong, sub-librarian for Special Collections, came on 31 October 2012 and spoke about rare books and especially the interesting collection in the University Library.

Topic: Hong Kong culture as seen through kungfu and kungfu movies

 

During the communal dinner on 7 November 2012, Professor Wong Kin Yuen of Shue Yan University talked about 'Hong Kong culture as seen through kungfu and kungfu movies'.  Before the talk, students had a great time chatting with Prof Wong about Chinese kungfu and famous descriptions of kungfu in novels and films.

Topic: Happy birthday to the Emperor: A blue and white vase at the Art Museum

 

On 21 November 2012, Professor Peter Lam gave the last dinner talk in the first semester by sharing interesting stories about artifacts in the Art Museum. His topic 'Happy birthday to the Emperor: A blue and white vase at the Art Museum' stirred much interest during the communal dinner. The vase in question, one of the most valuable pieces in the Art Museum collection, was a birthday gift to Emperor Kangxi, probably one of only three extant pieces in the world.
