6. Meet New Library Staff

Ms Vivian So
Head, Acquisitions

What do you do at the Library? What are you responsible for?

I am the Head of Acquisitions and my department is responsible for supporting teaching, learning and research at CUHK by acquiring and receiving printed books, journals and all other materials in tangible formats. We always strive to acquire these materials in a timely manner via the most economical means, while ensuring that all acquisitions are made in compliance with University guidelines and protocols. The purchased materials are processed efficiently to ensure that they are made available to CUHK Library patrons as quickly as possible. My team also handles the physical processing of materials, such as managing the binding work of the Library’s print collections.

What is your educational background and work experience?

My first library job was as a part-time Saturday library assistant on
the reference desk of the local public library. It was an enlightening and very enjoyable experience, although unpredictable: I had never expected to be asked to complete crosswords as part of my job! After graduating from library school, my first professional job was with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK as an Assistant Information Specialist. The role involved extensive searching of medical databases and resources to provide evidence for the development of national guidance and recommendations for healthcare management. After relocating to Hong Kong, I spent some time working in hospitals, organising medical information and records before moving on to the academic library field. I worked in the University of Hong Kong Libraries’ Lending Services (now Lending Services and Learning Environments), Special Collections (now Archives and Special Collections), and Technical Services (Acquisitions) before joining CUHK Library in October 2022.

The Library is a wonderful place to be, so do pop in and make the most of our rich resources.
