Greetings from CWC Alumni
|
The Academic Year 2016 marked the graduation of our first cohort. One year on, we continue to report on the journey of our founding students, who have witnessed the growth of the College.
In this Issue, two alumni share about their lives after graduation. They are Mr WANG Shijie and Mr YAO Kaixuan. The College wants to foster bonding with its alumni. Alumni are welcomed to share news about their careers, plans, or even family updates. Alumni sharing will be a feature in future Issues. By Mr WANG Shijie Time flies, and my first-year PhD studying at CUHK has come to an end. Just as I have expected, research work needs enthusiasm, patience and effort. It is not driven by a moment of excitement or sense of freshness. Instead, persistence is the key to properly deal with daily routines and stay motivated. Unlike the undergraduate period with a flexible time schedule, I do not have much free time now. Therefore, I treasure every Sunday and holiday. Sometimes, I go hiking on offshore islands of Hong Kong, such as Cheung Chau. I am currently doing research work on energy storage materials, so I have to conduct a variety of chemical experiments and microscopic examinations. My yearlong effort has rewarded me with a positive outcome. This June, I attended an international conference about materials, the 9th International Conference on Materials for Advanced Technologies, ICMAT 2017 for short, hosted by the Materials Research Society of Singapore at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition, and gave an oral presentation in a symposium, together with other PhD students from the world over. By Mr YAO Kaixuan After graduating from CUHK in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Physics, I started my postgraduate studies as a PhD student in Physics at the University of Chicago. I am currently working in the field of experimental quantum physics, where we meticulously control quantum systems to test various theories and explore new regimes. I am only able to appreciate and be a part of it because of my four years at CUHK. These four years turned me from an innocent boy with an ethereal idea of becoming a scientist and few insights into the real world into a well-equipped young man that has all he needs to identify his true dream and pursue it.
