This activity attracted participation of 13 CUHK students and 10 persons in recovery of mental illness. They visited an industrial building in To Kwa Wan and learnt basic repair skills from the volunteers of Wheel Thing Makers. Under guidance, altogether they had three abandoned bikes fixed, and each of them were even upcycled by being attached with a renewed wine crate as carriage. These revived bikes will then serve as shared vehicles in the To Kwa Wan community.
As part of the "Community Engagement Workshops 2017-18", this activity provided a learning platform for students to understand different districts and make contribution to the community through creative craftsmanship. Students also had the opportunity to interact with people in recovery of mental illness. "We spent three hours to repair the abandoned bikes hand-in-hand. All of us enjoyed the activity so much and had great fun. I found the recovered people no difference with other members of the society." said Wong, a year-two student of the Systems Engineering & Engineering Management Programme.
