Before dinner started the College arrayed its law students to received Mr. Wong. Mr. Wong shook hands with each of them and they had a casual conversation when students raised specific questions on legal studies, and Mr. Wong shared with them his personal stories and interesting legal cases.
In his speech during the High Table Dinner, Mr. Wong shared his experience as the former Justice Minister. He had been in government serving in the position as Secretary for Justice for almost seven years. These seven years have been a very fruitful and positive time, he said, because he was able to use his knowledge, skills and ability for the common good to work for the community, instead of just serving individuals, or looking only at how to increase his bank account. It is also very satisfying that he was given the opportunity to meet interesting, and sometimes very important people. He shared insights with Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, first Prime Minister of Singapore, and listened to Mr. Lien Chan from Taiwan telling how Taiwanese culture was influenced by the Japanese. Also Lord Howe was teaching him the humility a minister should have. He remembered President Hu Jintao said to him when he received him at the airport: "I know you are the youngest minister in Hong Kong." He encouraged students to sharpen their sense of fairness, on the basis of thinking about the underprivileged, not so much about oneself. "If you find something worthwhile and meaningful, invest time and life in it, not just in terms of what you can get from it, but of what you can give, what others can benefit from it."
