The 87th Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees was held at the University Mall on 7 November, 2019. Around 560 students were conferred the degrees of Bachelor of Science by Faculty of Science this year.

Such kind of questions might have flashed into your mind for many times and the walk-in consultation by Science Student Academic Advisors (SSAAs) is a new initiative taken to help resolve the doubts and your questions related to academic matters.

In the evening of 15 January, 2020, five alumni came back to CUHK after a full day of hard work and lessons to share with more than 70 fellow students their life as a science teacher.

Professor Jimmy Yu from Department of Chemistry is listed as Highly Cited Researchers 2019 by Clarivate Analytics for the cross-field category. Having demonstrated significant and broad influence across several fields through his published papers, Professor Yu is named in the list for the second consecutive year. Professor Xie Zuowei from Department of Chemistry is elected as a member of The Hong Kong Academy of Sciences. He will work with other members to promote the development and advancement of science and technology in Hong Kong and to raise the city’s profile as a centre of scientific excellence.

Research groups led by Professor Goh Swee Kuan and Professor Yang Sen, both from Department of Physics, teamed up to develop and apply colour centres in nano-diamonds as a tool for studying the characteristics of quantum materials under extreme conditions.

Professor Wang Jianfang from Department of Physics received the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship 2020 in recognition of his excellent scientific research work.

Professor Edwin Chan from School of Life Sciences is devoted to researching different neurological diseases and the work never stops. Recently, he has set up a multi-disciplinary research network called the Nexus of Rare Neurodegenerative Diseases (NRND) to make up-to-date information concerning rare diseases available.

Professor Joe Lee from School of Life Sciences and Earth System Science Programme, and his post-doctoral fellow Dr. Ouyang Xiaoguang revealed an underestimate of carbon stored in tidal wetlands to further establish the importance of Blue Carbon to countering carbon emission.

Professor Chan Ting Fung from School of Life Sciences recently discovered that long non-coding RNAs (IncRNAs) can produce small peptides, which are often regarded as the break-down products of longer proteins and long conceived as the derivatives of coding RNAs. This ground-breaking discovery challenges the established understanding of producing peptides with coding RNAs and encourages the restudy of IncRNA classification and function.

Professor Yang Sen from Department of Physics and five undergraduate students took part in the International Science Experience Week at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) from 17 to 21 November, 2019.

A genetic engineering team of undergraduate students from different disciplines devised a rapid test for a banana disease and won a Gold medal at the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) 2019 Giant Jamboree held in Boston, USA.

Mr. Alan Lui, a Physics alumnus, chose to enter the commercial field after graduation. Having worked in different large companies and actively participated in various public bodies, he decided to join a newly established virtual bank with no regret.

Mr. Wong Chi Wai Tommy, a Physics alumnus, received the newly established Outstanding Alumni Service Award – Career Development in appreciation of his contribution to the Faculty’s career development service.
