MAJOR PAST EVENTS

Visit of the Scientific Advisory Committee
The Scientific Advisory Committee comprising of Dr. Owen M. Rennert (Chairperson), National Institutes of Health, U.S.A., Dr. Ping-Yee Law, University of Minnesota, U.S.A., Dr. Vassilios Papadopoulos, McGill University Health Centre, Canada, and Dr. Rocky Tuan, University of Pittsburg School of Medicine, paid their second visit to our School between 28 February and 4 March 2011.
Experience-Sharing Lunch "Commercialization of Biomedical Inventions"
On 14 March 2011, the School of Biomedical Sciences and the Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO) jointly organized an experience-sharing lunch entitled "Commercialization of Biomedical Inventions" hosted by Dr. Ivan King, former Vice President of Research and Development, Vion Pharmaceuticals, Inc., USA.
AWARDS & HONOURS

Appointment of Prof. Wai-Yee Chan as Honorary Professor at Jinan University
Prof. Wai-Yee Chan, Director of SBS, has recently been appointed Honorary Professor to Jinan University, China.  The Appointment Ceremony, officiated by Prof. Y. F. Yang, Associate Dean of College of Life Sciences and Technology, Jinan University, was held on 19 January 2011 at Jinan University.
Prof. Huang Yu being Awarded the Ministry of Education (MOE) Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards 2010 - Natural Science Award
Prof. Huang Yu, Chief of Vascular and Metabolic Biology Program, received the "MOE Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards 2010 - Natural Science Award" for his project entitled "Cholesterol-lowering and Cardiovascular Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals". The Award Presentation Ceremony was held at the Lecture Theatre of Shaw College in the Chinese University of Hong Kong on 1 March 2011.
Six Teachers received the Teachers of the Years Award 2009/10, Faculty of Medicine
Six of our School members have recently won the "Teachers of the Years Awards (2009/10)", Faculty of Medicine, CUHK. These awardees included:
Prof. Christopher H.K. Cheng being appointed as member of the 23rd Comparative Physiology Committee of The Chinese Physiological Society
Prof. Christopher Cheng Hon-Ki, Chief of Reproduction, Development and Endocrinology Program, has recently been appointed as a member of the 23rd Comparative Physiology Committee of The Chinese Physiological Society. This appointment is a recognition of his continued commitment and contribution to the fields of molecular endocrinology and pharmaceutical research.

Representatives of the School attended "The 1st China-Hong Kong Academic Forum on Cancer and Microenvironment"

Prof. Chi-Hin Cho, Associate Director (Research) of SBS, led a delegation which included Prof. Franky Chan, Prof. Yang-Chao Chen, Prof. Wing-Tai Cheung, Prof. Gang Li, Prof. Ge Lin, and Prof. Stephen Tsui to participate in "The 1st China-Hong Kong Academic Forum on Cancer and Microenvironment". The Forum was organized by the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Oncology, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences from April 10-12, 2011 in Beijing.

Agreement Signing and Opening Ceremony of the "Joint Research Laboratory for Promoting Globalization of Traditional Chinese Medicines"
The Agreement Signing and Opening Ceremony of the "Joint Research Laboratory for Promoting Globalization of Traditional Chinese Medicine" was held in Shanghai in the afternoon of 31 March 2011.  This Joint Laboratory has been established by the School of Biomedical Sciences and the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) which aims to advocate the applications of traditional Chinese medicine and to promote innovative research and development in the globalization of traditional Chinese medicine.
Visit of Delegates from Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University
A delegation from the Fudan University, led by Prof. Chu Yiwei, Vice Dean of Shanghai Medical College, visited the School of Biomedical Sciences on 15 March 2011.
Delegation Visit from the Centre for Science and Technology Development Ministry of Education (MOE)

Prof. Jing Zhou, Deputy Director-General of the Centre for Science and Technology Development of Ministry of Education (MOE), led a delegation to visit the Chinese University of Hong Kong on 1 March 2011.

Prof. Rainer W. Guillery from Oxford University visited the School of Biomedical Sciences
Prof. Rainer W. Guillery, Emeritus Professor of the University of Oxford and a Member of Academia Europaea, paid a visit to our School between end of February and early March 2011.
Return Visits to the Robert Gordon University (U.K.) and University of Southampton (U.K.)

Shortly after the visit of representatives of the Robert Gordon University, Scotland, U.K. to the School of Biomedical Sciences on 23 November 2010 (details), Prof. Kenneth Lee, on behalf of our School, made a return visit on 18 February 2011.

Delegation Visit of the 4th Military Medical University
Prof. Li-ze Xiong, Dean of Xijing Hospital (the 1st affiliated hospital of the 4th Military Medical University); Prof. Zhou Fei, Director of the Neurosurgery Unit, Xijing Hospital; and Prof. Wei-ping Liu, Associate Director of the Neurosurgery Unit, Xijing Hospital, visited the School of Biomedical Sciences on 15 February 2011.
Delegation Visit to Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Branch
Led by Prof. Henry Wong, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, a delegation comprising Prof. Wai-Yee Chan, SBS Director; Prof. Ge Lin; Prof. W. H. Yung; Prof. Ke Ya, together with Prof. C. Y. Ng, Dean of Science; Prof. A. T. Ahuja, Chairman, Department of Imaging and Interventional Radiology; Ms. Samantha Wong, Office of Academic Links (China) et al, visited the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Shanghai Branch between 10 and 11 January 2011, to discuss issues arising from the "CAS Shanghai Branch – CUHK Joint Collaborative Framework".
