How to Make Modern Software Reliable: An Intelligent and Data-Driven Approach

Reliability is at the core of usability when it comes to modern software such as web services, cloud computing and mobile applications. As these software systems are widely utilised to provide a variety of services to billions of users today, one tiny reliability issue could lead to serious problems (e.g., network interruptions and service outages), which could further lead to revenue loss and user complaints. Thus, reliability engineering is very vital to modern software operation and maintenance.

If You Use Wi-Fi, Your Passwords May Be Easier to Steal Than You Think

In a recent study [1] led by the Department of Information Engineering, researchers found that insecure Wi-Fi configurations were specified in the setup guides of nearly 86% of 2,061 applicable tertiary education institutes (TEI), involving at least one mainstream operating system (OS). Insecure WPA2-Enterprise Wi-Fi configurations such as these can leave user credentials vulnerable to malicious third parties through a so-called Evil Twin (ET) attack. Multiple flaws were found in both client and server-side configurations within the TEIs’ Wi-Fi ecosystems, involving numerous OSes. To help protect Wi-Fi users worldwide, these findings were responsibly disclosed to the affected entities.

Meet the Magnetic Slime Robot Used for the Human Digestive System

With its custard-like consistency, a magnetic slime robot can typically navigate narrow passages, grasp objects, and fix broken circuits. Today, it can also be deployed inside the human body to perform risky tasks such as retrieving objects swallowed by accident. Developed by Professor Li Zhang of the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, the slimy gel-based miniature soft robot is controlled by magnetic fields to encircle objects and fit through tiny-and-tortuous spaces within our digestive system.

More information on the project is available from the
interview of Prof. Zhang by CNN, from 6:08 to 9:24.
