The Chinese Academy of Science and CUHK Hold Online Exchange Meeting
The Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) held an online exchange meeting on 11 May. Professor Zhang Yaping, Vice President of CAS hosted the meeting together with Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK. CUHK members participating in the meeting included Professor Alan Chan, Provost of CUHK and Professor Chan Waiyee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK.
Professor Tuan introduced the recent research and innovative achievements of CUHK and shared the experience of the University in facing the challenge during the epidemic prevention and control. He thanked CAS for its unfailing support and hoped that with solid foundation and achievements, CAS and CUHK shall expand collaborative plans and enhance linkages along with the Greater Bay Area Initiative. Dr. Fan Jianping, President of Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT) gave progress report of SIAT in 2019 and of the Joint Laboratories with CUHK at the meeting. Both sides took the opportunity to discuss future plans for deep collaboration and the challenges ahead.
CUHK has been in close collaboration with CAS in academic exchange and joint research projects since the partnership establishment in 1980s. Apart from the 2 State Key Laboratories and 9 Joint Laboratories, the two institutions joined hands with Shenzhen Municipal Government to establish SIAT in February 2006. CUHK has been organizing CAS Academicians Visit Programme cum Lecture Series annually since 2007, and the CUHK-CAS Partnership Steering Committee was established in 2014 to forge effective and sustainable relationship and strengthen bilateral partnership.
Beijing-HK University Alliance Organizes Annual Board Meeting and Working Group Meeting Online
Beijing Hong Kong University Alliance (BHUA) held online annual board meeting cum working group meeting 14 May 2020. Participants joining the meeting included Professor Tan Tieniu, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; Mr. Shu Gangbo, Deputy Director of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs of the Ministry of Education; Ms. Pan Fangfang, Director of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Office of Beijing Municipal Education Commission; Mr. Derek Lai, Principal Assistant Secretary (Higher Education) of the Education Bureau of HKSAR; as well as representatives of 20 member institutions of BHUA. Professor Wong Suk-ying, Associate Vice-President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) participated in the meetings on behalf of the University.
Peking University as the Chairmen of the Board delivered progress report of the Alliance. Speeches were given by participating government officials and guests. Discussions were held among member institutions on the topics concerning development strategies during the epidemic period, resource sharing and online lectures, as well as the communication and development over scientific research and innovations to enhance future collaboration plans. Professor Wong Suk-ying shared CUHK’s response measures, exchanging views at the meeting on the role of the University in the prevention of epidemic outbreak.
Founded in April 2018 by CUHK and various local and Beijing universities, the Alliance aimed at establishing closer linkage and exchange, enhancing talent nurturing and research collaboration, as well as the levels of higher education in the two regions. CUHK Participates in Cross-Strait University Exchange Forum
The 2020 Cross-Strait University Exchange Forum was held online on 20 May 2020. Hosted by Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) with a theme of Unity and Mutual Support for a Better Future”, the Forum was attended with 45 participants from 23 universities. Professor Wong Suk-ying, Associate Vice-President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of Academic Links (China) attended the event on behalf of the University.
Professor Xi Guang, Vice-President of XJTU gave a welcoming speech to all representatives. Participants discussed topics ranging from new communication patterns, implementation of anti-epidemic measures on campus to maintain normal teaching, to responsibilities of universities during the epidemic period. In her keynote speech, Professor Wong Suk Ying talked on the topic of how to enhance effective exchange modes among different universities during the post-COVID-19 period. Participating members shared the view that a mixed mode of online and offline teaching shall be developed to ensure teaching progress. The activity bolstered communication among the universities in the four regions, paving the way for future collaboration development.
