Board Meeting on Cross-Strait Forum in Humanities and Social Sciences
Delegations from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Fudan University, Nanjing University, Peking University, Taiwan University and Taiwan Central University visited the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 3 March 2014 to participate in a meeting on the Cross-Strait Forum in Humanities and Social Sciences (the Forum).
The Forum was a cross-strait academic exchange event developed among CUHK, Nanjing University and Taiwan Central University in 2007. In order to fully utilize the inter-disciplinary dialogues in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan to foster deep connection in academic exchange in humanities and social sciences, the Forum has been expanded to include more member universities and research organizations across the regions.
Representatives joining the meeting included Prof. Li Yang, Vice President of CASS; Prof. Lin Shangli, Vice President of Fudan University, Prof. Yang Zhong, Vice President of Nanjing University, Prof. Chang Ching-Ray, Vice President of Taiwan University, Prof. Li Kwang-Hwa, Vice President of Central University, Prof. Wang Lei of Peking University. They were warmly received in the University by Prof. Fanny Cheung, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Gordon Cheung, Associate-Vice-President, Prof. Leung Yuen-sang, Dean of Arts, Prof. Paul Lee, Dean of Social Science and Prof. Hsiung Ping-chen, Director of Research Institute for the Humanities.
The delegates and CUHK representatives shared views on overall direction and strategies in relation to the collaborative event. They so exchanged opinions on specific plans to be carried out for further development of the activities. A Standing Committee was formed among CASS, Peking University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Taiwan University, Taiwan Central and CUHK, University to oversee the development and enhance coordination.
With the aim of promoting mutual understanding and socio-cultural integration across the regions, the Forum will serve as a platform for prominent scholars to share views and exchange ideas in current topics relating to humanities and social sciences in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The meeting regarding the development of the Forum will further expand the depth of cooperation among the partner universities and research organization to achieve greater impact.

Lecture Series by Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) Scholars
The third Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) Scholars Visit Programme was held in The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) from 18 to 21 March 2014. Under the program, scholars of CASS are invited to visit CUHK each year and deliver public lectures to forge academic exchange in the humanities and social science. The program presents a valuable opportunity to build bridge between CUHK and CASS in terms of high-level research exchanges, paving the way for further collaboration.
The delegation of CASS this year comprised four prominent scholars including Prof. Zhang Jiang, Vice President of CASS; Prof. Zhu Ling, Division Member of CASS; Prof. Liu Danqing, Director of Institute of Linguistics, CASS, and Prof. Bu Wei, Institute of Journalism and Communication, CASS. The scholars were warmly welcomed by CUHK senior members including Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Fanny Cheung, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Hau Kit-tai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Leung Yuen-sang, Dean of Faculty of Arts and Prof. Paul Lee, Dean of Faculty of Social Science.
The scholars paid visits to the School of Journalism and Communication, Faculty of Arts, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Department of Economics, Institute of Space and Earth Information Science, Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages, the Centre for Chinese Archaeology and Arts, and the Institute of Chinese Studies, for academic exchange in relevant research areas.
During the visit, the scholars delivered 4 public lectures in the Lecture Series by CASS Scholars. They shared their expertise and views at the cutting edge of their chosen fields in economics, linguistics, journalism and literary criticism. Over a hundred scholars and students from CUHK and other universities as well as from the general public were attracted to the lectures.
