Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) Scholars Visit Programme cum Lecture Series 2018
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) hosted three distinguished scholars through the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) Scholars Visit Programme from 20 to 23 March. The three CASS scholars are Prof. Li Pei Lin, Vice President and Division Member of CASS, Prof. Fang Mei from the Institute of Linguistics and Prof. Wu Yao Wu from the Institute of Population and Labor Economics.
The University extended a warm welcome to the delegation. The scholars met with Prof. Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Fanny Cheung, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Chairperson of the Research Committee; Prof Leung Yuen Sang, Dean of Arts; Prof. Alvin Leung, Dean of Education; Prof. Chiu Chi-yue, Dean of Social Science; Prof. Anthony Fung, Co-Director of Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, Prof. Pan Haihua, Department Chairperson of Linguistics and Modern Languages and Prof. Alan Cheung, Department Chairperson of Educational Administration and Policy.
Visits were paid to relevant academic and research units of the University including the Institute of Space and Earth Information Science, the Institute of Future Cities, the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, Department of Educational Administration and Policy, and Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages, where the scholars familiarized themselves with the latest development of the University, and interacted with faculty members to discuss on further collaboration plans in a range of relevant fields.
The scholars delivered public lectures for the Lecture Series of CASS Scholars during their stay in CUHK, sharing their expertise in respective research areas with members of CUHK and the public. The lectures attracted an audience of around 150 people. Lecture details are as follows:

The CASS Scholars Visit Programme was first organized in 2012. Each year, three to four scholars are invited to visit CUHK and deliver talks for the Lecture Series of CASS Scholars. This programme aims to strengthen academic exchange and enhance long-term collaboration between CUHK and CASS, facilitating partnership development and research synergy. Academic Syposium on "Social Development and Social Governance" jointly organized with CASS
Jointly organized by Faculty of Social Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Institute of Sociology, the Chinese Academy of Social Science (CASS) and the Shanghai Academy, an academic symposium on "Social Development and Social Governance" was held on 22 March on campus. The opening ceremony was officiated by Prof. Chui Chi Yue, Dean of Social Science of CUHK and Prof. Li You Mei, First Vice President of the Shanghai Academy.
Participants of the activity included scholars and students from CUHK, CASS and Shanghai University with research interest on Chinese Social Developments. Prof. Chen Guang Jin, Chairperson of the Institute of Sociology, CASS delivered a keynote speech on "40 years Post-Reform: Changes in Chinese Social Structure". He elaborated on the social changes in China and consequential impact after the Chinese economic reform, putting forward specific proposals for future social governance. Representatives from various institutions took turns in sharing thoughts and conducted in-depth discussions on a range of panels comprising China's social structure, humanistic awareness and social behavior.
Over the years, CASS and CUHK have been collaborating in a variety of joint projects. The CASS Scholars Visit Programme was first organized in 2012, facilitating partnership development and research synergy between the two institutions. In 2014, CUHK and CASS jointly established The CASS-CUHK Chinese Archaeology Joint Research Base, as the territory's first research unit dedicated to combining archaeological expertise from mainland China and Hong Kong. The joint symposium promoted scholars' understanding of Chinese social development and governance model, laying a solid foundation for future cooperation between researchers from both regions.
