Prof. Ha Sau Ching Amy, Chair of the Department of SSPE, was recently awarded with the Vice-Chancellor's Exemplary Teaching Award 2009. As a passionate teacher and educator, Prof. Ha is committed to bridging the gap between research and practice. For instance, she recently visited a school with the Department's Year 3 students. During the school visit, the students were invited to observe real primary teaching and later joined a round table discussion with five schoolteachers. This is just one example of how the Department is committed to quality education that enriches student's reflective learning experiences. Prof. Ha remarks, "Teaching is all about mission and passion." With her aspirations in nurturing professional prospective teachers at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels, she sees the value in contemplating the notions of "what to teach, why to teach, how to teach, to whom I teach and when to use certain teaching approaches in different contexts". Prof. Ha's teaching currently focuses on research methods and pedagogy in physical education, adapted physical education and sports, and current issues in sports studies. She believes that teaching sits alongside learning, and through reflection, she is able to strive towards excellence. In addition, she is also an experienced basketball head coach and the President of both the Hong Kong and Asian Rope Skipping Associations. She believes that the interactions with her students and colleagues have empowered her professional growth. The most enjoyable part of teaching, she says, is "to bring out the best in my students and also myself through sharing my knowledge and experiences with them, and to learn how to listen so my expertise will grow".
