Thoughts about Research from the Undergraduate Students

From Chan Tik Wah Eddie (Year 4 SSPE Student)

        As a SSPE undergraduate in CUHK, the BEd degree at SSPE has given us a great opportunity to experience the fundamentals of research, especially in a PE-related setting. Research experience is essential towards our studies in the course, through them, we can gain a first hand experience in dealing with social issues and problems concerning our society. For instance, we can investigate in greater depth, topics such as obesity, sporting performances in Hong Kong and other health related areas. With the statistical course which we have taken in our first university year, the two courses (the statistical course and research course) combine well together, allowing us to apply our knowledge in research topics that we are interested in, with full support from the Department.


        I would like to share some valuable research experience of my own. One of the most valuable experiences was undertaken in my first year at CUHK. The research was part of the Statistical course, and I designed a research project to investigate the relationship with the lower extremity power (LRM) and the time in a 100m dash. This research was my first personal encounter in dealing with sports-related investigations, and although it was a simple research with a small sample size, every part of it was done by myself based on the knowledge that I acquired from the related courses in the Department.

        I believe that the course on "research methods" is an important subject for university students, especially for those who want to study further. I have taken the course, SPED3630 Introduction to Research Method this year. This interactive and inspiring course guides us through the world of research related to physical education. We learn mainly through a proactive approach. In addition to the normal lectures, we have different projects, for instance, designing a poster illustrating a specific topic, to practice our presentation skills.  We also have another project that involves the design of a real research. The research I designed was used to investigate how rope skipping could contribute to cardiovascular fitness and physical activity levels of primary school children. The actual research can be carried out if we take another course, SPED4900B Independent Project in the second semester.

 

        To conclude, the course has improved my reading and analytical skills. The course can definitely provide a solid foundation for our research work, which paves the road for further postgraduate studies, if any, in the future.
