Evolve with Remote Study or Work Era

With the uncertain development of the pandemic, we have been accelerated to master different technologies for hybrid or remote study and work. It is believed that this new norm will persist in the market after COVID-19 is conquered*. Are you confident to these tools and norms? They are also popular around the world!

  1. Access your PC or software remotely
    1. Online office apps without installation
You might want to do quick editing on documents remotely. Consider saving the documents in OneDrive and use the online Office version available at CUHK Microsoft Portal.
    2. RemoteApp for accessing University software
Virtual desktop is also available for course teaching which would make use of statistical software like SPSS, AMOS, SAS and MATLAB (login to see details).
    3. Remote desktop
If needed, you can access your office PC remotely. If you cannot, please contact your IT support to ensure your PC has been configured with such feature securely (login to see the configuration guide).
  2. Stay connected with your collaborators
    1. Zoom
This popular online meeting solution provides smooth experience in video, voice and screen exchange. One of its great features is that it supports telephony call, in case the audience network is unstable.
    2. Teams
This online meeting tool triumphs with its extensive use of Microsoft collaborative tools. Consider it if the meetings are on project basis and involve frequent file sharing.
    3. Calls
Staff can forward calls easily with the online portal. You don’t need to worry about exposing your personal phone number.

  1. Ensure your remote work or study setup secure*
    1. Make use of VPN
VPN is always an option to have secure network connection. We also have CUHK VPN and SSL VPN for one to access the University protected resources.
    2. Manage your use of device
While working or studying remotely, you might use other devices to access your account. In case you forgot to logout, 2-factor authentication helps avoid unauthorized access to your account and you can also remotely logout Microsoft services.
