Cross-Strait Green Competition Takes Place in Zhejiang University
The Green Competition Camp under Cross-Strait Green University Consortium 2019 was held in Zhejiang University (ZJU) from July 12 to 18, with the theme of "From Earth to Beauty". A total of 47 students from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Beijing Normal University (BNU), National Central University (NCU), Nanjing University (NJU), and ZJU formed 15 teams to take part in the activity.
Participating students prepared proposals, roadshows and presentations for the competition by conducting in-depth investigations into current green issues, inventing green products or improving existing products. The 8 CUHK students are from various disciplines, including English Literature, Financial Technologies, Public Health, and Architecture. CUHK Tree Project 2.0 - Never Let Me Go, taking the severe damage brought by Super Typhoon Mangkhut on trees and soil as a starting point, came up with an idea of underground pipes for the improvement of tree-fixing devices and of soil quality so as to energize and vitalize trees. Such innovative ideas made them rank fourth and earn a Third Award. The list of awarded projects is set out below:
First Prize:
- From Earth to Beauty: Original Multi-purpose Picture Book (Beijing Normal University)
Second Prizes:
- Mini Manor: Family Houses in Modern Community (Beijing Normal University)
- Green Tasks: Board Game Design Project (National Central University)
Third Prizes:
- CUHK Tree Project 2.0 - Never Let Me Go (The Chinese University of Hong Kong)
- Rice My Dream: Industrialized Promotion and Application of Functional Rice Varieties (Zhejiang University)
- Emergencies on Beaches: Children Picture Book Design Project (National Central University)
Apart from the competition, students had the opportunities to visit local land, farming and water resources and historical spots of Hangzhou to trace the development of the interactive relationship between man and land from the past to present. Participants also learned from various professors of ZJU about hot topics of land pollution, nano-technologies, and green constructions, and were guided to reflect on their attitudes towards green life and taste the "fruit" of ZJU's research efforts.
The Cross-Strait Green University Consortium was established by CUHK, NCU and NJU in 2011 with the aim of consolidating resources and driving initiatives that incorporate green concepts into research and education. The three institutions took turns to organize camps and competitions since 2011 and 2013 respectively to encourage students to implement and spread ideas of sustainable development, raising their environmental awareness. The Consortium welcomed the entry of BNU, ZJU and National Cheng Kung University as new member universities last year, and combined the competition and the camp for the first time which was organized by CUHK in 2016.

CUHK Organizes Return Visit for Regional Security and Development Study Camp
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) co-organized the Hong Kong Section of the Regional Security and Development Study Camp from 30 June to 4 July with the University of Hong Kong (HKU), inviting a total of 21 students and 2 staff members from Hainan University (HNU) and Peking University (PKU) to Hong Kong to enhance exchanges and linkages. The event took place right after the Hainan Section (click here for details from our last issue) ended in late June.
Led by 16 students from CUHK and HKU, participants took part in various learning activities in Hong Kong. Apart from attending lectures on campus, they also visited organizations like the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, the Hong Kong Museum of History, and the Tin Ka Ping Foundation to gain an understanding of Hong Kong's financial system and its historical and educational development. They also toured Ngong Shuen Chau Naval Base to witness the nation's military advancement.
Since the partnership establishment in 1985, CUHK has been collaborating closely with PKU on a wide range of student interflow programmes at university, college and faculty levels, which are very popular among students. The collaboration in student interflow activities has been enhanced with HNU since 2017 when a collaboration agreement was signed between the two universities.
