CUHK Achieves Outstanding Results at Elite Chinese Universities Dragon Boat Race

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Dragon Boat Team (CUDB) kept their paddles busy over the Tuen Ng weekend of 7 to 9 June by taking on an inter-institutional dragon boat race in Hangzhou with local and national universities.  Our students shone in the Elite Chinese Universities Group of the competition by defeating Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, the University of Macau, and taking home the First Prize once again after last year's achievement.  The score is just behind the overall champion of Zhejiang University (ZJU) by less than one second.

Members of 20 teams altogether put on a display of two matches at Xixi National Wetland Park of Hangzhou.  CUDB raced with teams from 12 universities in the mainland and Macau, while ZJU competed with another 6 local universities in the Hangzhou University Group.  With their outstanding performance, both universities were able to snatch the First Prize, ranking equal to University of Science and Technology of China as well as Nanjing University in the Elite Chinese Universities Group.  The First Prizes of the Hangzhou University Group went to Zhejiang University of Science and Technology and ZJU. The paddlers  were also given the opportunity to learn from Ms. Xu Yaping, former World Champion and national team member of sprint canoeing, who shared with students her experience of sports and competitions.

Founded in 2015, the University's Dragon Boat Club thrived rapidly over the past four years.  Not only were they officially recognized as a University Sports Team in 2018, but also reigned the Overall Champion in the USFHK Dragon Boat Championship.  The Elite Chinese Universities Dragon Boat Race is one of the major competitions in the Hangzhou Xixi Wetland Dragon Boat Festival since 2011. The activity helps build valuable friendships and enhance exchanges in sports education between CUHK and other manland universities.

CUHK Co-organizes Regional Security and Development Study Camp with Peking and Hainan Universities

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) co-organized the Regional Security and Development Study Camp (Hainan Section) with Hainan University (HNU), Peking University (PKU), and the University of Hong Kong from 24 to 30 June in Hainan Province.  Besides campus activities at HNU, staff and students of the four universities also paid visits to local spots and national military facilities to learn about the development of regional tourism and coastal defence in the Province.

Aside from acquiring knowledge of the Province's latest development in lectures covering such hot topics as regional security, national defence and the Hainan Pilot Free Trade Zone, participants had the chance to visit famous Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park, Wuzhizhou Island and Nanshan Buddhist Cultural Garden, as well as tour the Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences during the seven-day programme.  Such activities enabled students from the four universities to learn more about the region and develop friendships.

CUHK signed a collaboration agreement with HNU in 2017 to enhance academic interflow and collaboration. The first student interflow programme between the two universities was held in 2018.  This bilateral visit between Hainan Province and Hong Kong is first of its kind in which the University co-organized activities with another local university. The return visit to Hong Kong will be held from 30 June to 4 July this year.
