The 9th meeting of Partnership Steering Committee between The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) was held on 23 December in CUHK. The meeting was co-chaired by Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, and Prof. Ma Jun, Vice President of SYSU, with a total of around 40 participants from the two universities.
Participating members of CUHK included Prof. Wong Suk-ying, Associate Vice-President; Prof. Liao Wei-hsin, Associate Dean of Engineering; Prof. Raymond Chan, Department Chair of Mathematics; Prof. Joseph Lau, Associate Director, The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care; Prof. Xi Chao, Faculty of Law; Prof. Shaw Pang-chui and Prof. Wong Po Keung, School of Life Sciences; Prof. Cheung Sui-wai, Department of History; Prof. Tao Qian, Department of Clinical Oncology; Prof. Yu Jun, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics; and Prof. Tong Yuying, Department of Sociology.
Representatives of the different collaboration groups reported respective project progress and reviewed the collaboration status. Joint projects ranged from oncology, computer science and information engineering, biotechnology, Chinese medicine, historical anthropology, sociology, legal studies, gastroenterology, mathematics, public health, environmental studies to academic links and student affairs. Possibilities to expand the scope of collaboration and supports from the university level to facilitate further growth were discussed at the meeting. Following the recent developments on the collaborative efforts, new collaboration opportunities were also suggested with devised plans.
SYSU has been one of the key partners of CUHK since the establishment of partnership in 1981. Both universities have carried out a wide range of joint collaborative projects in student exchange, research collaboration and academic programmes. The CUHK-SYSU Partnership Steering Committee was set up by the two universities in 2008 to forge effective and sustainable relationship. This year, CUHK and SYSU joined hands as the initiating universities in Hong Kong and Guangdon Province to establish the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance in collaboration with the University of Macau (UM). The Alliance aims to promote regional development by consolidating resources of elite universities and nurturing talents. The inauguration ceremony was held in November 2016 and there are currenly 26 member institutions of the three regions joining the Alliance.
