2019 Working Group Meeting of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance in CUHK
The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance(GHMUA), which was initiated by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and the University of Macau (UM), called a working group meeting on 22 March to discuss work plans under the Alliance. Participants at the meeting included Prof. Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK; Prof. Jiang Jianxiang, Deputy Director of Department of Education, Science and Technology of the LOCPG in HKSAR; Ms. Sun Xuejing, Deputy Director of Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs, Ministry of Education; Mr. Liu Junfeng, Consultant of Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, the People's Government of Guangdong Province; Ms. Winkie Chick, Assistant Secretary (Higher Education) of the Education Bureau of HKSAR; and Mr. Teng Sio Hong, Head of the Department of Higher Education Institutions, Higher Education Bureau of Macao, together with representatives from the 28 member institutions joined the meeting.
Attendants reported work progress and discussed the annual work plan for the coming year. Attention was paid to specific collaboration in a variety of areas, covering research collaboration, student interflow, academic exchange and think tanks development. A range of projects will be established including the setting up of professional sub-alliances, international summer school and theme-based student activities, sharing of research resources and application of joint laboratories. Members also discussed upon the working schedule comprising the organization of the alliance annual meeting this year.
Prof. Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK spoke at the meeting: "The Guangdong- Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will intensify its economic, scientific and technological strength. The key contribution from our alliance is in research and education. Synergy between institutions from the Greater Bay Area will enhance the international competitiveness and influence of the higher education in China. The University attaches great importance to boosting communication with all member institutions of the alliance, which is conducive to the substantial growth of research and educational collaboration."
Founded in November 2016, the Alliance aspires to gather elite universities in the region, to facilitate the nurture of leaders and to foster regional collaboration. Member institutions include 9 universities from Hong Kong, 12 universities from Guangdong Province and 7 universities from Macau. CUHK Participates in Greater Bay Area Higher Education Cooperation Development Research Meeting
The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Higher Education Cooperation Development Research Meeting was held in Zhuhai on 6 March. Based on the promulgation of the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Development Plan), the meeting aims at gathering comments and suggestions from universities of the Greater Bay Area for better planning of upcoming strategies on education. Ms. Wing Wong, Director of Academic Links (China) attended the meeting on behalf of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).
The meeting was chaired by Mr. Wang Yufei, Vice-Chairman of Department of Development Planning of Ministry of Education. Participants included representatives from the Education Department of Guangdong Province, the Zhuhai People's Government and universities from the Greater Bay Area. Targeting at enlisting support for future implementation of collaborative projects between institutions in the Great Bay Area, the meeting reported on education achievements in the past with potential collaboration area proposed and challenges reviewed.
CUHK has long been in close collaboration with various institutions in the Greater Bay Area on academic exchange and scientific research. With the establishment of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance initiated with Sun Yat-sen University and University of Macau in November 2016, the University extends collaboration among institutions in the three regions to pursue research excellence, nurture young talents and render community services.
"My Love" World Tour in Beijing
Organized by The Foundation of Alumni Associations of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), "My Love" World Tour has concluded the grand performance in Beijing successfully on 2 – 4 March, following the success at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and the Michael J Fox Theater in Vancouver, Canada last year. The performance has attracted around a thousand audience including government officials, strategic partners and alumni in Beijing.
Guests from CUHK attending the performance included Dr. Norman Leung, Council Chairman; Prof. Joseph Sung, former Vice-Chancellor and Mok Hing Yiu Professor of Medicine; Ms. Cheung Fuk Ying, President of the Foundation of Alumni Associations of CUHK; and Mr Derek Ho, President of the Beijing-Tianjin Alumni Association. Among the audience also included guests and representatives from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Tsinghua University, China University of Political Science and Law, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing Normal University and Beijing Language and Culture University. The performance received support from different sectors, rallying strength of the CUHK alumni, and enhancing the profound friendship between CUHK and universities as well as research organizations in Beijing.
