CUHK Members Visit Major Partners in Beijing
A delegation of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) visited partner institutions in Beijing on 27 – 28 December 2017. The delegates included Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK at the time of the visit, Prof. Fok Tai-fai and Prof. Fanny Cheung, Pro-Vice-Chancellors; Prof. Wong Suk-ying, Associate Vice-President; Prof. Wong Kam-fai, Associate Faculty Dean of Engineering; Ms. Janet Chow, Director of Institutional Advancement; Ms. Wing Wong, Director of Academic Links (China), and Ms Eleanor Hui, Assistant Director of Alumni Affairs.
CUHK delegates met with leaders of the universities in Beijing, including Party Secretary Chen Xu, and President Qiu Yong of Tsinghua University, Party Secretary Hao Ping of Peking University and Director Dong Jie Hong of Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, to receive updates on the latest developments and discussed collaboration directions. Prof. Sung also gave a talk for the CUHK Distinguished Lecture Series (click here for details), and took the opportunity to attend the Joint Chinese Musical Performance with Tsinghua University (click here for details) and meet with CUHK alumni in Beijing.
Another visit was paid by Prof. Fanny Cheung and Prof. Wong Suk-ying to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), where they met with Prof. Cai Fang, Vice-President and other representatives of CASS to discuss collaboration plans in research and academic exchange. Prof. Wong Kam-fai and other delegates also visited the Fundamental Industry Training Center and X-Lab of Tsinghua University, to discuss curriculum collaboration on CUHK's Entrepreneurship and Innovation (EPIN) Minor Programme.
CUHK has been in close ties with various institutions in Beijing, especially with Tsinghua University and Peking University, in a wide range of areas comprising student exchange, research collaboration and joint programmes since some 30 years ago, yielding fruitful results. The University also bolsters linkages with research organizations in Beijing, witnessed by frequent visits of scholars and having laid a strong foundation for long-term research developments. The visit consolidated the existing collaborative efforts of CUHK with institutions in Beijing and enhanced ties for future collaborations.

CUHK Joins Guangdong International Applied Science & Technology Trade Expo
The Guangdong International Applied Science and Technology Trade (GAST) Expo cum Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area Innovation and Investment Exhibition took place in Guangzhou on 18 – 20 December 2017. Representatives of over 500 units, including the world's top enterprises and key universities from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau joined the Expo.
Hosted by Guangdong Industry-University-Research Collaboration Association and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance, the Expo has its foci on technological development and transfer of research findings, showcasing over 1,000 projects and around 10,000 exhibits in such fields of applied technology as artificial intelligence, robotics, cloud computing, big data, automated driving, biometrics, investment enterprises, camera module, virtual reality, as well as transfer of knowledge outputs of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance.
Member institutions under the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance actively participated in the Expo. Apart from promoting products and project proposals, and sharing research outputs with one another, CUHK delegates exchanged ideas and explored new ways of research through different forums and seminars. The Expo gathered decision-makers in global investment, applied technologies, tertiary education, and innovation and entrepreneurship to facilitate establishment of synergy and platforms, promoting the transfer of technologies and deepening collaboration among the industry, the academy and the research sector. It also helped exhibitors reach collaboration agreements and encouraged market expansion for hi-tech products.
Established in 2016 and initiated by CUHK together with SYSU and the University of Macau (UM), the Alliance is a higher education platform which aspires to extend the current efforts of elite universities in promoting academic cooperation in the three regions. The partnership fosters collaboration in various areas including scientific research, student interflow, cultural and innovation exchange as well as the building of think tanks. With 26 member institutions, the Alliance is committed to the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area and its development in technological innovation via talent nurture and knowledge transfer.

CUHK Research Teams Participate in China (Dongguan) International Science and Technology Cooperation Week 2017
The China (Dongguan) International Science and Technology Cooperation Week 2017 took place at Dongguan, Guangdong Province from 8 to 10 December. Coordinated by the Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services and Office of Academic Links (China), the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), formed a delegation to participate in this event. Ms. Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, visited the booths of CUHK to understand the University's latest research developments in biotechnology and medical devices.
CUHK delegates showcased a total of eight research projects during the cooperation week. Not only did they share their technological breakthroughs and experience in knowledge transfer, but they also explored new modes and directions for research collaboration with participating instiutions and organizations. The University took the opportunity to further expand its platforms of scientific and technological collaboration in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Big Bay Area, deepening linkages among the industry, the academy and the research sector.
The China (Dongguan) International Science and Technology Cooperation Week has been held since 2004 for 13 consecutive years, with an aim of promoting cooperation in science and technology and talent nurturing projects via a specialized cooperation platform. The event has been co-hosted by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the People's Government of Guangdong Province starting from 2013.
