The First Southern Institute of Chinese Linguistics Opens in the Greater Bay Area

Hosted by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance for Chinese (GHMUAC) and organized by the Department of Chinese, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), the first Southern Institute of Chinese Linguistics was held from 5 to 14 December online. The Institute was jointly-supported by the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, and T.T. Ng Chinese Language Research Centre, Institute of Chinese Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), to serve as a platform for intellectual exchange and interflow among academics and students in Chinese linguistics in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The Southern Institute of Chinese Linguistics organized 14 online lectures during the 9 days. Each lecture of about 2.5 hours was delivered by renowned scholars in the field of Chinese Linguistics. Focusing on different aspects of Chinese linguistics, the lectures attracted an enrollment of more than a thousand people from and beyond the Greater Bay Area. It achieved the mission of the Institute which is open to colleagues and students based in the Greater Bay Area while welcomes those beyond. This also implemented the motto of the Institute “Precious is to appreciate cultures of others as one appreciates one’s own. Through mutual understanding of diversity, the world will be a harmonious and united one.”

GHMUAC was established by CUHK, SYSU and the University of Macau in July 2019 to elevate the cooperation in the field of Chinese by bring together research efforts at a higher level among universities in the Greater Bay Area. A wide range of workshops and summer institutes have been developed in Chinese Linguistics with significant impacts. The establishment of the Southern Institute of Chinese Linguistics is aimed at providing a mechanism of education exchange and learning in the south of China including Hong Kong and Macao to serve as a supporting platform to enhance academic linkage in Chinese Linguistics.

CUHK Participates in the Greater Bay Area and Cross-Strait Youth Conference on Artificial Intelligence

The Greater Bay Area and Cross-Strait Youth Conference on Artificial Intelligence was held from 12 to 13 December. Renowned artificial intelligence experts, industry leaders and young researchers were invited to join the activities. Professor Wong Kam Fai, Associate Dean (External Affairs) and Director of the Innovation and Technology Center of the Faculty of Engineering from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), was invited to give talk at the conference. Professor Wong delivered a talk entitled "XC - an Explainable AI Method to Make Your Chatbot Trustable", explaining the difficulties faced by Chatbots and how the newly developed "interpretable Chatbots" can analyze the potential defects of users and their behavior changes to help developers adjust the underlying algorithm.

The conference not only showcased the research achievements of young scientists in the three regions in the field of artificial intelligence, but also promoted the cross-regional academic exchanges relating to new generation of information technology. Such activities further bolstered the growth of young scientists in innovation to discuss development trends and explore related industrial cooperation in the Greater Bay Area.
